Living in a world where nothing is for sure, people may find it hard not to be cynical. In a day, if there are about 88 couples who want to get bonded, there would be 196 couples who can't wait to break the wedlock at the same time. When we hear an 11-year-long marriage ends up with nothing but grief, we would question the existence of 'forever', and start wondering,'Is true love forever, or for 'over'?'
The cynicism for love is probably related to lack of belief in love, or to reluctance to believe in it. A good-looking guy would never know what 'devotion' means, since his relationships will not be long enough for him to figure it out; beauty may be just skin deep in the cliche, but it is definitely the golden rule in the start-point of a relationship. A man is willing to spend ten years courting a girl to win a faithful housekeeper in return. True love only exists in fairy tales, and false promises are the reality. Can we be any more cynical? The reluctance to trust in love may have something to do with fear or insecurity, but it has much to do with uncertainty. In such a world where fast-food restaurants renew their menus every month, software industries update their products now and then, and people purchase novelties and dump the unneeded, is a relationship also on the inventory? How do we know the one we meet is the right one? Won't a dreamlover turn into a heartbreaker next minute? Why bother getting involved into a relationship which we do not even have hope for? It is such a cynical attitude that leads to the large number of single people, and it is transient passion that deepens the cynicism.
Maybe the cynicisms for love result from our long-term exposure to others' pitiful stories, or from our own repeated failures in love. The fears of losing and getting hurt make us take the safe road and travel alone. By keeping telling ourselves not to fall for unworthy guys, we end up trusting no one and mocking at love as hard as we can. However, there is still a teen girl inside ourselves, who longs for Mr. Right's company. That's why we are touched by the movie 'You've got mail' in which the characters are attracted to each other by sharing ups and downs by mail. Even if a romance movie is nothing but a fantasy, we may still wish someday Prince Charming would come on his horse and rescue us from the cynical world. While we are sighing for the non-existence of good men and long-lasting relationships, we are still looking forward to the appearance of a special man and the maintenance of a relationship. Being cynical but hopeful, most single women try to survive such an unpredictable world.
