這首《Mrs. Robinson》首次出現是在1967的電影《The Graduate》( 台譯：畢業生 ) 中，卻非特別為了電影所寫，而是在Paul Simon所提供的兩首歌遭電影導演Mike Nichols「打槍」後，勉強丟出來的歌曲。此曲內容原是有關Mrs. Roosevelt和Joe DiMaggio，但卻受到Nichols的青睞，並建議將Mrs. Roosevelt改成了Mrs. Robinson。

Mrs. Roosevelt指的是美國羅斯福總統夫人，她除了本身也是位政治人物，並且是在位最久的「第一夫人」 ( 16年 )。而Joe DiMaggio是美國洋基隊的棒球明星，其最知名的應是連續56場擊出安打紀錄。而另項讓人樂道的則是曾娶美國影星瑪麗蓮夢露 ( Marilyn Monroe ) 為妻。此首《Mrs. Robinson》推出後，因歌詞中提及其名，而使得Joe DiMaggio甚為憤怒，後經溝通說明歌曲中是以他作為以往英雄的代表，才得以釋懷。

電影《畢業生》講的是一位剛從學校畢業的青年 ( 達斯汀霍夫曼飾 )，對於人生尚無明確的目標，此時受到中年熟女Robinson太太的引誘，而與之發生了親密的關係，之後又喜歡上了Robinson太太的女兒，是一部禁忌話題的電影。台灣當年上映時，將「母女」的關係改成了「姊妹」。

《畢業生》獲得最佳影片及最佳男女主角等7項奧斯卡提名，並獲得最佳導演獎。電影成功，原聲帶也跟著爆紅。後Simon & Garfunkel將此曲完整重錄，並在1968的專輯《Bookends》中再度推出。此曲也於1969贏得了葛萊美「年度最佳唱片」及「最佳當代流行二重唱或團體」兩項大獎。
