Text Messaging in Business Situations

Some tips for text messaging in business.

1.Remain professional-Remember that you are still working and many people can see these messages.

2.Write concise, yet complete sentences-Keep your sentences complete and short. Save the details for email and face-to-face communication.

3.Review your message before sending. Auto correct for typing can lead to potentially embarrassing errors.

4.Keep messages short-If a text message is more than three sentences long, it should be an email not a text message.

5.Follow up by email-Just like a phone or face-to-face conversation, follow up and confirm through email. This allows you to keep a permanent record of the conversation that can be easily referred to if needed.

6.Avoid the temptation to use too many abbreviations and acronyms. It is very tempting to use abbreviations and acronyms while texting. Be careful. You still need to clearly communicate your message. Just because text messaging is inexpensive, does not mean we can be sloppy with our communication.

7.Text only in appropriate situations-Avoid texting while in the middle of a conversation with others. Give the person you are talking to your full attention for that time then address the text messages.
