阮提一寡牲禮佮花
來到阿公汝的厝
逐冬這个時陣
攏來遮揣汝開講

即馬汝毋知去佗位
厝邊糞埽滿山墘
埕內埕外草籐四界旋
趕緊清氣汝厝的四邊
汝若轉來就知影阮骨力摒掃過

阮恬恬坐踮門口等汝
逐家講起汝以前種種的形影
即馬無阮佮汝作伴
毋知汝過了按怎

日頭已經欲漸漸落山矣
阮閣愛趕去別位
阿公汝若轉來
一定知影阮有來過

實在行袂開跤
姑不而衷先講一聲再會
每年阮一定會閣再來看汝
阿公呀! 彼个時陣

拜託汝毋通閣無佇厝裡

 

Tomb Sweeping Day

 

Bringing some gift and flowers

We go to visit you, our dear grandfather

We must come here once a year

To chat with you

 

You aren’t at home

Under your roof there is a mess of grasses and flowers

And the yard is muddy, too    

We help by trimming overgrown trees and cleaning the yard

To give you a surprise

 

We keep in silence

Sitting in front of the door to wait for you

Without us accompanying you

We don’t know how you get here alone

 

The setting sun is already down

We need to go to another place

When you come back home

You must know we were have to visit you

 

We are unwilling to part with you

We look back at your home again and again

Next year we will visit you again

Remember, grandpa, at that time

You need to be at home to wait for us
