最近大學學測英文學科考了一則與化妝舞會相關的題目，於是出現了這樣一則新聞：

學測英文科閱卷召集人、台灣師範大學英語系教授張武昌表示，化妝舞會正確英文字非常難，是「masquerade」，歌劇魅影歌辭裡有出現，但評分標準放寬，考生寫costume party或cosplay party也算正確，但若寫成makeup party、dressing party、disquising party則會被扣分。如果考生只寫party，則不會被扣分。

這則新聞引起了我的興趣，不只是因為英文是我生活的重要工具，同時也因為化妝舞會是歌劇魅影中很重要的一個橋段。
因為法文不好，我沒以原文讀過 Gaston Leroux 所著的歌劇魅影原著，但我讀過兩個不同的英譯版本，一個是市面上常見的由 Lowell Bair 翻譯的版本，另一個版本標題叫做 The Essential Phantom of the Opera，由 Leonardo Wolf 翻譯並加註。兩個版本不約而同地把化妝舞會翻譯成 masked ball。在國外的歌劇魅影討論網中，當談論的不是歌詞而是場景時，網友往往也將化妝舞會稱為 the masked ball。
A masked ball，顧名思義，就是戴面具的舞會。英英字典可以查到這個詞的解釋：

由此我們可以得知，化妝舞會的英文有以下這許多種說法：masked ball、fancy-dress ball、masquerade ball，此外還可以說成 masque（假面劇、化妝舞會）、masquerade、masquerade party等。此外當然還有開頭那則新聞中的張教授所提到的 costume party。
至於新聞標題中所謂的化妝舞會正譯，也就是masquerade 這個字，在英英字典中的解釋為何呢？很有趣，有的字典就直接解釋為：a masked ball。
