Sound of a Voice offers love story

Shih-Yi “Joy” Huang isn’t promising a happily-ever-after ending.

Sure, the story is filled with the makings of a fairy tale, one with a love story at that. There’s a knight of sorts who is sent on a mission to kill a witch. There are woods with a cabin in the center.

And there’s a mysterious woman who may or may not be his target.

OK, so let’s go ahead and say it — they fall in love. That’s a given. But then there are the revelations, the conflicts.

And, well, the ending isn’t happy.

“It’s really quite sad,” Huang said.

She’s co-directing this production of David Henry Hwang’s 1983 play The Sound of a Voice. Kao-Chen “Gary” Liao is her partner in this endeavor.

The play will open Tuesday, Feb. 3, in LSU’s Hatcher Hall Theatre.

Huang and Liao are Taiwanese, and both are doctorate students at LSU, Huang in the LSU Department of Theatre, which is staging the Hwang play as part of its Studio Series.

“I’m specializing in culture studies,” Liao said.

But the play and its theme fall neatly into their fields.

“We’ve had experience working in theater in Taiwan, but not in an all-English production,” Huang said. “So, this is a first for us.”

Hwang’s story was inspired by Japanese folk tales and films, told through the mythic metaphor of Japanese literature. It was first produced on a double bill with his play The House of Sleeping Beauties on Nov. 6, 1983, at the New York Shakespeare Festival in The Joseph Papp Public Theater.

The play opens with a Samurai, played by Jason Duga, who is on a glory mission to kill a witch. He has no name, his character simply labeled “man.” And this man stumbles upon a woman, played by Thanh Phan, who lives alone in a cabin.

She is terribly lonely, and she yearns for a voice, any voice, to talk to her.

The man suspects the woman may be the witch, yet he’s somehow attracted to her. She seems harmless, and he falls in love with her as the story progresses.

Yet he can’t shake his mistrust. True, she’s delicate and beautiful, but she’s able to perform wonders in cookery, horticulture and martial arts. The latter wounds his pride, and he can’t accept her superiority.

“He gradually discovers that she does have witch power, but she’s worn him down,” Huang said. “He’s in love with her, but she soon discovers that she’s in love with him.”

The man realizes he can’t kill this woman, but he can’t stay, either. The woman is devastated and makes a tragic threat.

Does he stay? Does she carry out her threat? That part of the story is left to the performance.

The story’s true core is found in its progression, where characters confront their fears of growing old and of never finding love — of never being comforted by the intimacy of a long and trusted relationship.

“It’s very emotional,” Huang said.

Rehearsals began two weeks ago, which is plenty of time for this two-person cast.

“Most of the action takes place inside and outside of the woman’s cabin, so we’ll have a full set,” Liao said. “But the problem is arranging the set in our theater setting. The Hatcher Hall Theatre is a theater in the round, and we must build the sets in such a way that they don’t block the audience’s view.”

All will be ready for opening night.

“We’re not really nervous,” Liao said. “We’ve had experience in this.”

“We are excited,” Huang added.

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. And tragedy or not, one thing’s for sure, love is in the air at Hatcher Hall Theatre.
For above all else, The Sound of a Voice is a love story.
