I loved Madonna's "Material Girl" pretty much. At the time, I just started to learn English, and it's difficult to understand the lyrics even I checked out all the words with dictionary. Her MV was also very attractive, though it was a mimicry of Marilyn Monroe's performance of "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend". After all, Monroe was long time ago, Madonna was big hit at the time. Though not quite understood the lyrics, I could pretty much relate the meaning of lyrics to its title, "material girl". Even today, watching the video, I still feel it very entertained.
Both Marilyn Monroe and Madonna are iconic; didn't their songs inspire the girls at the time and after? I think most girls would think both songs amusing. But there should be some inspired, too. How does our society view such an inspried "material girl"?

People envy her ample luxurious jewelry, big expensive mansion, and all kinds of luxury goods. Well, that's materialism, and she is a material girl.  This is not unique phenomenon in modern time, not even special.  Such a girl can earn her celebrity now and in the old time. In modern time, she is a celebutante; in old days, a courtesan. The biggest difference now might be media exposure, and the glamour that media exposure brings with subsequently.
