Finally got a chance to discover new places
and can't wait to share all these with you guys
I believe when people is looking up for attractions in South Dakota
the No. 1 search result is definitely Mt. Rushmore
so...I guess I am going to talk about this place first
it is a memorial monument
4 big heads of presidents of United State standing on the granite in Black Hill area
and of course you will see the most important one--George Washington
(FUN FACT:
and there are also Jefferson, Roosevelt, and Lincoln
4 of them were important in the first 150 years of the history of USA,
which is why they were decided to be the 4 stands forever up the hill.
this big project started in 1933
Washington is the first one finished
then Jefferson 2 years later
they finished Lincoln in 1937
finally they finished Roosevelt in 1939.
they spent 98992.32 USD for all this
and nobody was killed in the middle of the construction
(must be an impressive thing in that time)
but the monument was not officially become the national park till 1991.
BUT, does a memorial place like it "fun" at all??
to be honest, it's a place for tourists to take pictures of the cool heads
(no entrance fee for the park, but have to pay for parking,
it's 11 USD per vehicle, and it's good for one year, how nice of them!)
there is a museum (named after the son of the construction manager)
and theater in the memorial park
it tells you everything about the process of the park and history
and there is gift shop as well
but actually, the fun places is the drive to Mt. Rushmore
the president heads located in Southwestern South Dakota in Black Hills
most of the part is granite
and there are many narrow tunnels that you HAVE to pass on your way
park rangers strongly recommend those tunnels
and there is a State Park near
it is also where I am going to talk about next--
Custer State Park
it is the biggest state park in South Dakota
(the entrance fee is 15/vehicle, valid in 7 days)
you will see lots of cute prairie dogs and buffalo all over the place lol
(Wildlife loop)
the most famous area is Wildlife Loop
there are a lot of wild donkeys will stuck in your way,
and put their heads in your car and beg for sth to eat
though it says not to feed wild animals
but that's like the whole reason why people get there,
and it's too hard to say no to the donkeys when their heads are in your car
so we still feed them
but with carrots, more natural stuff for wild animal
there are lots of people feed them bread and cookie
come on people, they are wild animals, it might be too hard for them to digest man made food
so if you really want to feed them
please give them something it won't hurt their stomach
(I think they love carrots, because they chase after me!!!! scary)
there is another pretty place in the park
the movie National Treasure 2 was filmed there, too.
Sylvan Lake
Sylvan Lake is called the jewel crowned in the park
giant rocks and lake is good for picnic for families
and there is a sign tells people
DO NOT jump into the water from the rock
because you never know you will hit th rock or the water
one more fun place for today
it's also on your way from Custer State Park to Mt. Rushmore
since the visitor center is not on the main road
so there is a big chance that you will miss it
so beware of any sign along the road (the speed limit one, too)
but the following spot I am going to introduce is a must stop one!!!!!
the third spot is Wind Cave National Park
when you see the visitor center
you might think "so what the hell is in this park, I can't see nothing but grass"
and you would be like "where is the cave"
but what you don't know is,
there are something amazing underneath your for about 200 feet deep
Wind Cave National Park was a sacred giant underground cave for Indians
and the park is also the first national park in the world that set up for maintain the cave
so far the length of the cave is about 219.76 km
and I am not going to tell you how does the cave form and what's in the tour
you will have to find it out when you personally go on a tour and listen to the park rangers
that's their job anyway
there are 5 tours in Wind Cave National Park
two of them need reservation (must be more difficult to take)
the other three is open for everybody
(price: 9 USD for each adult; one of them is shorter so it's 7 USD)
here are some pics from the cave
I took them during the tour, I know it looks creepy
but it's totally different when you personally take a tour, I swear!!
(they call this popcorn!)
if you have enough time,
maybe take two tours
(I only had time for one last week, might go for another next week)
or you can take one tour in Wind Cave National Park
and take another one in Jewel Cave National Monument (which is not far from
Wind Cave)
(didn't have time to take tour in Jewel Cave last week. But I did stop at the visitor center
in Jewel Cave, seems like the two caves are different,
so you don't have to worry about seeing same thing in 2 parks and spend 2 times of money)
if you are still worry about it
please check their official website
there are details (kinda) for every tours, too
ant there are so many fun places I want to share with you
but I don't want to make you read too much at one time
so there will be another article for South Dakota
and here are the web page for Mt. Rushmore and Custer State Park
if you want to know more or make a plan to visit, you can check these as wekk
there will be some places that are not national park in next article
and I will try to finish it ASAP
thanks for all of you read my article
and please keep sharing opinion and follow my page ~~
