This year, I have been swimming at Beitou Sports Center (BTSC) since May 18. The temperature of the water there is fixed at 30 degrees celsius, and in very few occasions 29. The temperature is in fact too high for swimming. However, it's difficult to find a decent cooler water pool in Taipei. I love swimming in ourdoor pool specially in summer days. It's one of the best things to do in the summer. Under summer's fierce sun, the outdoor pool's water is indeed even warmer than indoor "warm water" pool, it generally shot as high as 33 even at nighttime. So, the indoor warm water pool is actually cooler than outdoor "cold" water pool in summer here. This is the reason why I would choose indoor warm water one for swimming in the summer days.
Visiting a friend in Taichung and I was invited to come along with his family's swimming or water-playing event. We went to swimming pools facility in the wetern discinct of the city and there were 3 pools. One is meant for playing, mainly for kids, then a so-called, "swimming training" pool, the temperature is fixed at 30, the very last one, a "master" swimming pool, the temperature is fixed at 24 degrees celsius.
After place his family in "playing pool", we went to master swimming pool. I tried the water and felt it cold, and thought this might be nice, I had not swum in this kind of temperature for long, but it would have been much nicer if I were just to finish a cycling trip, and really could use some cold water to cool my body at the time, but it was not like that.
I started with breast-strokes for warm-up laps, which is usually 10. However, the length of the pool is only of 25 meters, I actually swam shorter there than I used to. Then I felt something strange happened to me when I was about to finish 10 laps, I felt difficult to breathe and felt like I'm penetrating the mass (water) of stronger resistance. So, Instead of taking 500 meters as warm-up, I took 10 laps for "cool-down."
The experience of cool-down
This is a very special experience, I felt being cooled down. Besides, my chest and the limbs felt like being pressed with something, which made me not be able to move easily and demanded me to breathe more frequently than I used to.
The temperature for swimming
This table is what I found on internet. It states some relation between temperature and swimming.
各溫度層之安全的冬泳量
各溫度層之安全的冬泳量 |
溫度(攝氏) | 長度(公尺) | 時間(分鐘) |
0 | 30 | 1 |
15 | 450 | 15 |
16 | 480 | 16 |
17 | 510 | 17 |
18 | 540 | 18 |
19 | 570 | 19 |
20 | 600 | 20 |
21 | 630 | 21 |
22 | 660 | 22 |
Besides, I aslo found
水溫應保持在25~28攝氏度。比賽期間水溫應保持恆定,水面不能有大的波動。
So, the temperature of 24 degrees celsius is actually a bit low, but it's still within reasonable range. Perhaps, I should start to find a pool of cooler water.
