A location-based service is an information and entertainment service, accessible with mobile devices through the mobile network and utilizing the ability to make use of the geographical position of the mobile device.

Five Tech Themes for 2010

By JENNA WORTHAM

It’s hard to believe that a decade ago, there was no Facebook, iPhone, Wikipedia or YouTube. Almost shocking, considering how those entities have shaped a culture around the Internet, disrupted business models and affected how and what information was shared through the Web.

So what big Web themes might we see emerging into the next few years? Based on reporting and informal chats with venture capitalists, here’s a quick guess at what might be big in 2010.

The third wave of mobile applications: Mobile app stores continue to evolve from kitschy collections of games and novelty programs into robust catalogs of applications that push the limits of what a cellphone can do. So where can we expect to see the next big innovation? External attachments. So far, Square, a device that plugs into the audio jack of a mobile phone, turning it into a credit card machine, has made the splashiest entrance into the market, but that is just the beginning. Example: a glucose monitor that could directly port blood sugar readings and other health information into a program for analysis.

kitsch  n. works of art or objects that are popular but that are considered to have no real artistic value and to be lacking in good taste, for example because they are sentimental
splashy  adj. bright and very easy to notice

Location, location, location: Start-ups like Hot Potato, Foursquare, Grindr and UrbanSpoon have generated a lot of buzz for their forays into the mobile location-based arena, but it’s only the beginning — particularly in light of the new geo-location features made available to developers and users on Twitter. It’s likely we will begin seeing many more useful location-based applications.

foray  n. 1. an attempt to become involved in a different activity or profession (改變職業、活動的)嘗試 ~ (into sth)  2. a short sudden attack made by a group of soldiers 突襲;閃電式襲擊 ~ (into sth) 3. a short journey to find a particular thing or to visit a new place 短途(尋物);短暫訪問(新地方)

Continued decline of the wireline: Close to a quarter of households in the United States rely exclusively on mobile phones, according to a recent report from the National Center for Health Statistics. And as sad as it is to realize your parents are disconnecting the only phone number you still have memorized, that figure is expected to rapidly grow as more Americans turn to Internet-based telephony and wireless carriers offer more competitive pricing for unlimited calling plans.

Web TV: As my colleague Nick Bilton pointed out a few weeks ago, ditching the set-top box and watching TV online is little more than a few clicks away. But while his set-up was admittedly more complicated than simply connecting your laptop to a big screen, it will get easier in 2010. In addition to start-ups like Clicker and SetJam aiming to make it easier to find what you want to watch online, Apple may even start peddling a monthly subscription service that would allow television companies to deliver TV programs via its multimedia software. Companies are getting into the game with services like Comcast on Demand Online that allow customers to watch thousands of TV episodes and some movies via their Web browsers.

All Your Memories Belong to the Web: Evernote, the popular note-taking service, recently announced it had hit a major milestone by surpassing two million members. But the company’s victory signals a larger shift in how the Web – and our mobile phones – are becoming a larger repository for our memories. Companies like Evernote are paving the way, but expect to see more entrepreneurs and start-ups vying to supplement our gray matter with silicon.

repository  n.  1. a place where a large number of things can be kept or stored 2. a person or book that is full of information
vie  v. to compete strongly with somebody in order to obtain or achieve something
