 2.9  La niñez y el imperfecto

Hoy aprenderás a el imperfecto y la niñez como
De niño, jugaba con muñecas.



En el español, tiene dos formas del pasado,

el pretérito
el imperfecto

Fui al zoológico ayer.  
Leí el periódico esta mañana.

Hoy aprenderás la otra forma de pasado: El imperfecto

El imperfecto: describing past actions without definite beginning or end.
e.g.
De niño, jugaba con muñecas.        
    
    muñeca  nf. doll

This is a little bit different than I played with the doll from 2 o'clock to 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon.  Very specific time in the event, calls for preterit.       

The imperfect, it's for time is not so specific.  Or an action happened over and over in the past.       

El imperfecto: vague time in the past or habitual past actions.       
e.g.       
Mis padres siempre almorzaban a la una de la tarde.       
My parents always ate lunch at one in the afternoon.

While, there is specific time mentioned, this is the action that happened over an unknown amount of times.       

The key here is to remember that the preterit and imperfect may have the exact same translation in English, like ‥My parents ate lunch.       

In Spanish, the imperfect gives very general idea when something happened in the past.  It doesn't have to have the specific time of when it began or it ended.  you will see lots of phrases like,        

de niño,            as a child
a menudo,          often
a veces,              sometimes
por lo general,        generally
todo el tiempo,        all the time

and quite a few others ...       
       
All these phrases give you the feeling that no matter what action that follows, it happened more than one occasion in an un known amount of time in the past.       
       
(Yo) Jugaba con mi sos de peluche chad día.       
I used to play my Teddy bear everyday. 


Siempre te peleabas en el patio de recreo.       
You always fought on the playground.


Mi hermana saltaba a la cuerda por las tardes.       
My sister used to jump rope in the afternoon.

I used to play with blocks everyday.

Jugabas videojuegos todo el tiempo.       
You play video games all the time.

Jugaba con muñecas.       
She used to play with dolls.

Jugábamos con muñecos de mi hermano.       
We used to play with my brother′s action figures.

Jugabais con el tren eléctrico en la escuela.       
You used to pay electric train in the school.

Jugaban en el patio de recreo cada tarde.       
They used to play on the playground each afternoon.

             Imperfect -ER, -IR endings:  plus ía then...

She used to have a guinea pig named Lilly.

Teníamos muchos peces tropicales.       
We used to have lots of tropical fishes.

Siempre teníais los mejores muñecos.       
You used to have the best action figures.

Tenían muchas pistolas de agua.       
They used to have lots of water-guns.

3 irregular verbs in imperfect       
ver, ir, ser               
ver- veía, veías, veía, veíamos, veíais, veían       
ir- iba, ibas, iba, íbamos, ibais, iban       

most in compound sentence, e.g.       
       
Iba a ver una película pero leí un libro.       
I was going to watch a movie but I read a book.

Cuando era niño leía mucho.       
When I was a little boy, I read a lot.

Eras muy tímida en la escuela primaria.       
You were very timid in elementary school.

Era desobediente cuando tenía cuatro años.       
She was very disobedient when she was four yr old.

Eramos muy tímidas como niñas.       
(The teacher said, "tímidos", but it should be tímidas.)
We were very shy children.

Cuando erais niños, siempre os peleaban.       
When you were young boys, you fought all the time.

Mis muñecas eran las más bonitas.       
My dolls were the most beautiful.
