Taiwan doubles pair make history
Chuang and Chan reached the final with a straight-sets victory
Chuang Chia-jung and Chan Yung-jan created history when they became the first players from Taiwan to reach the final of a Grand Slam on Thursday.
They will play Cara Black and Liesel Huber in the women’s doubles final after beating reigning champions Yan Zi and Zheng Jie of China 6-3 6-4.
”We lost to them in the Asian Games final and this is revenge,” said Chan.
Meanwhile, reigning champions Bob and Mike Bryan will play Jonas Bjorkman and Max Mirnyi in the men’s doubles final.
Chuang said the secret of the Taiwanese pair’s success was not taking the tournament too seriously.
”We are just trying to be relaxed and have fun and it looks like it is working,” she said.
”Lots of people are watching in Taiwan. Maybe we will go home as heroes.”
Last year Zheng and Zi became the first Chinese players to win a Grand Slam tournament and Zheng admitted they were disappointed not to retain their title.
”Our opponents played very well. In the second set we had some chances and a lot of break points,” said Zheng.
”I am not so happy because we wanted to go to the final.”

Black & Huber take doubles title
Black, Huber, Chan and Chuang collect their prizes after the final
Cara Black and Liezel Huber ended the hopes of Taiwan’s Chuang Chia-jung and Chan Yung-jan by winning the women’s doubles title at the Australian Open.
Chuang and Chan made history when they became the first players from Taiwan to reach a Grand Slam final, but they fell short against the third seeds.
Zimbabwean Black and South African Huber came through 6-4 6-7 (4-7) 6-1.
It is the second Grand Slam title for the pair, who were also victorious at Wimbledon in 2005.
”We’ve been through a lot together and it’s great to have you back on board,” said Black.
And she added to the runners-up: ”You are a really young team and what a great achievement to get into the final in your first Grand Slam.
”I know you’ve got a great future ahead.”
