On Love

The deepest need of man is the need toovercome his separateness, to leave the prison of his aloneness. The fullanswer to the problem of existence lies in true and mature love.
What is mature love? It is union under thecondition of preserving one’s integrity, one’s individuality. Love is an activepower in man, a power which breaks through the walls which separate man fromhis fellow men, which unites him with others. Love makes him overcome the senseof isolation and separateness yet it permits him to be himself. In love theparadox occurs that two beings become one and yet remain two.
