Discover your flipping wings…

I remember quite clear now:

when I walked into the golden lane where Franz Kafka once had lived,

I asked the policeman:

“ Which house was inhabited by the winner of Nobel Prize: Jaroslav Seifert ?”

He hesitated for few seconds, then replied me with gentle smile:

“Who is he?...Can you repeat his name?”

I took out my guidance book, and indicated his name :  Jaroslav Seifert.

It was a bright sunny day, his name burned my finger.

Poet, your face is easy to be forgotten? Or you used to be?

You put your soul into the chrysalis, to hide between the silent leaves and flowers,

to be nurtured by the joy of life, sorrow of death…

Until one day, someone (who speaks the same language with you)

steps into your garden,

And discovers your flipping wings…

Listen, they are fragile as light, solid as shade.

<Song> Jaroslav Seifert

We wave a handkerchief

On parting,

every day something is ending,

something beautiful’s ending.

The carrier pigeon beats the air,

returning;

with hope or without hope

we’re always returning.

Go dry your tears

and smile with eyes still smarting,

every day something is starting,

something beautiful’s starting.

*Cafe Slavia : a quiet corner for Czech writers and poets . Seifert had mentioned this coffee shop in his essays for several times.
