這本書的作者Steve Stockman是一位愛爾蘭的長老教會牧師，他常常在他主持的BBC電台節目中播放U2的歌，也常應用U2的歌在他的講道與寫作中。
作者身為 U2的歌迷兼好友兼研究者，他認為U2比那些一天到晚唱敬拜讚美的都實在，甚至批評這一堆「敬拜讚美福音歌手」，輕鬆容易地在教會市場獲得成功，卻不敢大膽衝撞外面的世界。他說現今的福音歌曲工業是一個「Safe Industry GHETTO」，(GHETTO原指猶太區，這邊指基督徒生活圈)，這個「安全區」會限制真正有福音信息的音樂發展，呼籲大家要「Out Of The GHETTO」，鼓勵基督徒歌手要直接進入「一般市場」。
雖然他也知道U2的團員都抽煙、偶而醉酒、常常講髒話…諸如此類，不「聖潔」的生活，不過，他認為這些「矛盾」恰恰顯出上帝恩典的「完全」。重點是上帝如何「使用」U2這個超級暢銷又超級入世的「基督徒」樂團，而U2又如何在掙扎過程與勝利成功中，保持對基督的信仰。
書從U2的開始(1976成立於都柏林的「Shalom」基督徒團契)到2000年的所有專輯、媒體報導、演唱、訪談…都做一個大整理，特別注重歌詞的內涵，理出許多原本「曖昧不明」的歌詞的「屬靈意義」(此舉卻也令U2其他團員不快，其他團員認為BONO的歌詞最棒的地方就是不講明，有很多層面的意涵；如今，BONO跟這位朋友作者講明了，都失去了這些歌的偉大之處)。
