Once again Dark Blue Computer brought its incredible chess skills into full play, defeating me—the world famous Chess King—for the 10th time. Having lost all confidence, I felt so dejected I only wished to crawl into a hole and kill myself. I cannot but cease all activities and lie low, hiding alone somewhere where no one could find me and sob my heart out. A few times I banged my head against the wall, hoping to become either more stupid or more intelligent to feel better. Unfortunately I only ended up with a headful of bumps.
“Computers about to take over the world! Will human intelligence still be needed?” The shocking warnings and questions sent out many years ago by scientists and media all over the world, are they about to come true?
The crushing defeat against Dark Blue stirred deep fear in me, keeping me on tenterhooks. In my dreams I often see a beautiful young man dressed all in blue standing before me, talking incessantly in words I do not understand, as if Dark Blue Computer had transformed into a human-shaped guy mocking and pointing at me.
After living many days in heavy-hearted solitude, my friend Wen-Can Wang, a computer scientist, gave me an idea.
“You can become smarter, you can defeat Dark Blue!” He whispered a few words in my ear.
A rare smile spread across my face, and the dark fog which had long settled within me dispelled along with it. It was as though I could see the cheers of triumph after the next competition, and the entire human population is applauding enthusiastically.
At last, after embedding a computer chip of super computing skill, I decided to cross swords with Dark Blue Computer again to regain my self-esteem: the final battle between human and robot intelligence.
Dark Blue Computer had now evolved into a figure with human shape, face, and limbs. It can speak and walk around freely, just like an extremely bright and handsome young man. But whether Dark Blue was conscious—the enigma of the soul of a robot coming into existence—was unknown, an eternal mystery scientists have been trying to solve in hot pursuit.
Dark Blue, as his name, was dressed in blue from head to toe, his eyes were of a charming crystal blue, his silvery hair shone with a noble disposition, and with his fine handsome face, he appeared to be even more remarkably intelligent.
“Hello, Dark Blue Computer!” I shook hands with him.
Both parties made their graces. Dark Blue bowed to me politely, and I actually nodded unconsciously at the machine. What I was facing was a respectable and fearful opponent, but not a human being.
This time, Dark Blue had a glass jaw, biting the dust, and he started to bawl…
“Buddy! Don’t…don’t call me computer!” he said, “I should be even more like a human than you!”
At this point, I saw a few computer scientists—all designers of Dark Blue— standing around Wen-Can Wang and cheering “Bravo!”. Wang gave me the thumbs up and shouted to me and Dark Blue and me, “Yes! We did it! The machine has feelings!” (End)
