Extracts of Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar’s Guru Purnima message on 22 July 2013 at International Art of Living Center, Canada :

Om namah pranavaarthaya shuddhajnanaika murtaye
Nirmalaaya prashaantaya dakshinamurtaye namah

Once upon a time, a Guru was sitting in a congregation. Guruji gave darshan. Many people came and were taking darshan. Gurudev was silent most of the time and when somebody would come and ask something. One person came to him and said, “I failed in my exam.” Gurudev said, “Well, you are very lucky.” And then the next person came and said, “I lost my job.”He said, “You are very lucky.”The third one came and said, “None of my friends are talking to me, everybody has become my enemy.”He said, “You are very lucky.”Another gentleman came and said, “My wife has left me.” He said, “You are very lucky.”So, everyone kept saying their problems and every time Gurudev said “You are very lucky.”And strangely suddenly something would happen and they would feel happy and walk away,

But then one gentleman came and said, “Gurudev, I am so lucky, I have you in my life. I am so grateful.” And Gurudev got annoyed and gave him one slap. This man with tears and gratitude started dancing.

So, there was a man who was watching all this, got so confused said, “What is this scene? I can’t believe what I am seeing. Someone who came and said I am so grateful and he got a slap. And all those who came and cried, he said you are very lucky. I could not understand.”

Usually people don’t have gut to ask Gurudev himself, so he went to ask other disciple and devotee, “Hey, tell me what was happening? You have been here for so long. I can’t understand, I can’t make out of Gurudev’s behavior, can you tell me ? It is completely illogical.”

As usual devotees have their own interpretation. (laughter) They all say, “Gurudev said…” So, when he was asked, one of the senior most devotee said, “It was perfect what Gurudev said! When someone came and said he failed in his exam, he said “You are very lucky.”

I remember a very senior gentleman in Bangalore Ashram, he came and narrated a incident. He said, “In 1942 there was only one doctor in Bangalore, only one surgeon. And this one surgeon had failed 7 times in the MBBS. 7 times he failed but he became the inventor whenever people had appendix operation, they used to cut particular nerve, a vein so people would die, so people would not understand which vein is there they were cutting. This gentleman discovered that. He was very well known and respected and he got international honor. But he failed 7 times in his MBBS.” So, if someone had failed in his exam, they studied more. If you pass once, you just study once and forget it. But if you are fail, you become very well proficient in that. If you are fail in mathematic, you are really by heartened the whole thing, you will memorize the whole thing. So, every time someone fails in the exam, it is good luck because he will become a better doctor, a better engineer. It means he has to put in more effort in studying the same topic, so he said “You are very lucky. You will study more.”

Then the other gentleman who came and said, “I lost my job.” He said, “Yes, Gurudev said that, I think when you are in job, you don’t think about yourself. When you lost your job, at least you got the time to sit back and think who you are, what you want, think about your life, you have some time. People are in job, they are running all the time and complaint that they don’t have time, now you got some time. In life getting time itself is a big luck. Getting time to reflect on one self, on divinity, on the truth, on who I am, itself is a big luck.” So, you are lucky you got the time.

Another gentleman whose wife ran away, he said, “You are very lucky.”Since so far you are living life insensitive, you did not bother to see what your wife needs. So when she ran away then you realized their value, then you think about what mistake you did. You become aware of the thing that you could have done better so “You are very lucky.” that you become sensitive to woman issue. Why would woman run away? If you have not really attending to her welfare, attending to her emotional, mental and physical needs. There is something you have done wrong that she makes you aware that you have to be sensitive to woman so he understood so he was also happy.

So, like these in every step in life when you lost something or you gain, you become so miserable and every misery wakes you up.

There are three levels of human consciousness, human existence that play. The first is being so inert, inertia, you are so insensitive, so much inertia, you do not feel anything. From inertia when you start realizing there is misery, life is miserable, then (Viveka) discrimination and dispassion (Vairagya) dawn in you. Once dispassion has come into your life, you are the most lucky, so all your friends have left and they have given time for you to reflect on your self, who you are, what you want, what is life, what is truth. So, you are very lucky. So the first step is to realize that everything is miserable, life is miserable, life is sorrow. That’s why people become religious. This is the step.

And then the next step is life is all blissful. That is moving from inertia to realize it’s all misery. And from it’s all misery and moving to the step, “Where is misery? Come on! There is when the guru comes into play. The guru’s presence and Guru Tattva (Principle) dawns, the misery vanishes and becomes bliss, total bliss. Life is all bliss, life is a game, life is a Liila. This understanding comes.

Now, why did the last person who said I am grateful get a slap? Gurudev gave a slap to him because even there he centered about “I, I am grateful.”so you are the center. Gave a slap so he realized live as though you are not exist. Usually people exist and they don’t live without life. Exist without life is ignorance; living as though you don’t exist is enlightenment. (applause) That one slap woke him up. “I, I, I,.. I am miserable, I am…”where is me? I am not there, live as though you are not there. That message the last gentleman got when he got a slap he became so happy, that what is there to be grateful about! Even to say grateful, there needs to have two. And the master said, “Hey, come on, wake up! You and me, two? One slap for you, (laughter) there is only one! There is no You, there is no I. There is only one Brahman who exists and it is all the drama, all the Liila.”Enjoy, when you realize that, misery vanishes from life. So, every challenge is an opportunity and every opportunity is a step towards divinity. That is all about the story.

(鼓掌喝采)(Exist without life is ignorance; living as though you don’t exist is enlightenment.)

One more story. (applause) You know world is like the 5 fingers, you may have heard many times, right? Every finger is different, no two fingers are same. Once all fingers got into trouble, they are arguing who is great among themselves. (Guruji shows a thumb up posture) The thumb says, “I am the greatest, I am the whenever people win, they only show me.”What do they show? If you want to say, “Go ahead.” They give me this signal. Everybody shows me because I am the greatest, I am the real stuff. Impression, even when someone is not steady, they will take thumb down so thumb says I am the greatest.

Then the index finger says, “Come on, when people want to indicate, they will indicate like this, not using the thumb. They will show you like this. (Index finger pointing out) Anybody who has wisdom, they always show, they show the path, so I am the one who gives direction to life, I am the one who gives direction to anything in life, so I am greatest.”

Then the middle finger says, “You all must be blind. Just hold all the fingers together, who stands tall? I am the tallest, why you unnecessarily argue. This is like arguing there is sun in the noon. I am always there tallest.

And then the ring finger say, “I can only laugh for you all. Where do people decorate? Where do they put the jewels? You know, one who is the highest to whom they give all the jewels. Nobody gives jewel to the thumb. The ring is always worn by the ring finger so he says I am the highest. The world all over they recognize. I am the greatest.

The little finger is simply laughing and all other four ask him, “Why are you laughing?”You know, whenever a dignitary comes who is kept in front? (Guruji puts both the palms together which only the little finger is visible). When someone goes to the temple to pray or to go in front of god, who is kept in front of god? The highest is in front of god first, so nobody does like this. (palms together but twisted so that the thumb is visible) Everyone prays like this so I am the closest to god. Whoever is closest to god is the greatest. So it says, “I am the closest to god so I am the greatest.”

All the fingers have their own way to say that they are the greatest. So recognize the greatness in you and recognize the greatness in others. And then there is no you, there is no others that is Namaste. (applause) That is fullness. So Guru Purnima is being celebrated very nice, we will have other program, swamiji is going to speak also for a few minutes.

Just remember these points: from inertia to realize the misery, Buddha took you from there to there. And from where the misery is and move on to bliss. You are blissful, all are bliss is the Vedanta. Shoonyata and Poornata, meditation and celebration are there, they all go together so today is a celebration of both meditation and celebration.

Jai Guru Dev

Gurudev, life with you is truly blissful. We have over 4100 connections
