(8) 二十年後收到Tom的第一封信2003

在過去的歲月裏，Tom總共寫給我七封長信，那時每次書信的往返約需一個月的時間。大一那年冬天我寄了一份聖誕禮物給他，從此毫無音訊，我以為他不再理我，至此我也不敢再寫信給他，.....如此中斷了22年，直到在Pchome寫新聞台才想起他，透過我在紐約的讀者幫我找到Tom.....,而他也納悶，這中間到底發生什麼事？為什麼失去聯絡？Anyway，我知道有一天他會找我的，正如我也在找他一樣。他說二十年來，我心中依然有你....
So, how are you? You must tell me what has happened to you since we last wrote.

Dear Hsing-Yi,

Wow, was I surprised when I got a telephone call yesterday. A girl was asking if I knew Hsing-Yi from many years ago. She gave me your E-mail address and said you were trying to contact me.

I am so glad. I have been wondering if I could write to you through your old Christian Children’s Fund address. Now I don’t have to wonder. I can write to you with the computer. How wonderful.

So, how are you? You must tell me what has happened to you since we last wrote. Julie, the girl on the telephone, says you have a family and your own business. I’m so happy for you. I have a family, too. I am married and have a daughter. She is 13 years old. Her name is Eryn. My wife’s name is Pam. I love them both.

There is so much to say to you I don’t know where to start. Julie says you don’t speak english well. I hope you can understand my letter. Please write back to me. I would really love to hear from you.

This will have to be a test letter to see if you can understand my english. I will be looking for your E-mail.


You still have a place in my heart after all these years.

I still live in Connecticut, USA, but in a different town from when we used to write. In my other message I told you I have a daughter, and she is getting interested in finding out who you are. It would be a good idea if you wrote back to me.

I look everyday for your messages.

Dear Hsing-Yi,

It is wonderful to hear from you after all these years. And I am not upset that you reprinted my letter to you. I am just very happy you are well and still remember me.

Some time ago, I think it was many years ago, I started to tell my daughter, Eryn, about you. At first she was interested but maybe because you are so far away she lost interest. I never thought I would hear from you again, so I just put your picture and letters away and smile to myself. I think about all the excitement you brought to me with your letters.

I think the last I heard from you, you were going off to school. How did you do? The last you heard from me I was grtyting very involved in my college education and with another woman. The college worked out well but the woman didn’t. Anyway, I grew and started my life without her. I think I have done pretty well.

Tell me about yourself and your family. Julie, in New York, says you have a family.
