硬底子 好身手

Unlike the Cavalier before, the new Chevy Cobalt has quality written all over them. The material felt better, fit and finish is much improved. On road quietness is almost on par with the competitors from overseas. If not looking at the gold bow-tie on the grill, one can easily mistake the Cobalt as an import.
Cobalt comes in 3 distinct flavors: 2 door coupe, 4 door sedan, and the performance SS supercharged version. Driving the top of the line LT 4 door sedans, we were truly impressed by the driving dynamics. GM Engineers have done a marvelous job tuning this Delta platform, so it has the comfort and stableness typically associated with larger cars without losing the nimbleness of the compact class. We were also surprised by the comfort of the wonderful leather interior and the beautiful music from the XM satellite radio.
Powered by a supercharged 2.0L engine, the SS produces 205 hp and 200 lb-ft of torque. Distinguished on the outside by special aero works and an oversized tail wing, this little coupe looked fast even when standing still. Stepping on the gas, a rush of speed accompanied by the deep throaty exhaust music, launched the 2991 lb coupe forward with gusto. If not known before hand, we almost thought this car has a 3 liter V6 in it.
Starting at only $14,190, the new Cobalt is a good value for a family sedan. For $21,995, the SS coupe is an attractive performance bargain. Looks like GM finally got serious in challenging the imports on the compact sedan market.
從Los Angeles上101號公路往北,收到CHEVROLET邀請函的筆者,前往風光明媚的Santa Barbara,在原廠安排下進行一系列的Cobalt試駕活動。這款嶄新的小型車,是CHEVROLET取代Cavalier的產品,為表重振市場決心,特向遠在德國的OPEL汽車取經,運用Delta平台打造出這輛作品,CHEVROLET還打出相當吸引人的14,190美金基本售價,並提供三年36,000英哩五年60,000英哩變速箱保固。
這次原廠準備給媒體的,是全系列包括雙門、四門以及SS機械增壓款,筆者遵照原廠授意先行嘗試四門基本款,或許是對陽春的既有標準,實際觀察這輛小車作品,倒不認為會是所謂的「陽春」小車,略微上揚的照明總成使Cobalt顯得炯炯有神,中間一道鍍鉻護欄切過水箱罩,與金色十字CHEVROLET廠徽相互輝映,襯托出相當氣勢。比起過去Cavalier新車多了幾分質感,反而更像一輛家庭房車。筆者行駛於公路,Cobalt的靜肅性和高速穩定印象深刻,管它外面落山風肆虐,車內就是相當安靜,筆者雙手觸及的每個角落、接縫,完工品質均不在話下,鬆散、粗糙是不成立的。
接著換乘Cobalt的四門頂級款LT,迎接筆者的是一連串蜿蜒山道,打開XM衛星收音機、空調,將自己塞入米色真皮座椅中,穩定的底盤表現,即使在一些角度偏大的彎道,整輛車動態仍顯得不緩不徐,筆者感覺就是「穩」,穩得就像是一輛中型房車,儘管側傾難免,但轉向反應均在可控制範圍內,不像是起價15,000美金內的入門車種。
當然!能夠駕馭雙門款SS是大部分媒體代表的意願,筆者運用中間時段狠狠地品嚐這道速度佳餚。一開始路段運氣不佳,遇上警車關切,跟著Cobalt SS後的大尾翼好一陣子,這提醒筆者警察並非外行,端視SS外型營造的殺氣,就知道絕非簡單貨色。事實也是如此,原廠借用ETON代工的機械增壓,將原廠2.0升ECOTEC引擎搾出205hp/5600rpm,扭力亦是高達200lb-ft/4400rpm。「兩百」魅力搶眼、機械增壓也不讓人失望,一路幾近龜爬時速的我,在擺脫警力糾纏後下個彎道全油門,一股渾厚力道將2991磅車身拋入直線,獨特的增壓聲浪伴隨下SS以高速挺進,原本落後甚多的筆者,僅在幾秒內迅速跟上車隊,在大貨車擋路時筆者退檔補油門,方向盤一帶便超越車陣揚長而去,此種加速表現感覺類似3.0升以上的六缸車種,很難和一輛2.0升四缸小車產生聯想,足見SS魅力不凡!但買家也得支付21,995美金方得以成為SS車主。
在德國當地,同樣借用DELTA底盤的Astra,鎖定的是VW Golf等級市場,到了美國則換上CHEVROLET品牌,以純美風格架構入門產品線。說實在地,各角度分析Cobalt都不太像「小車扮相」,無論是超過180in的車長到103.3in的軸距,以及前低後高的乘坐格局,就算是給一般家庭使用,都能應付得綽綽有餘。至於個性鮮明的Coupe雙門式樣,筆者願將最高評價給SS車型,那種引擎出力和硬底子表現的底盤設定符合,加上20,000美金出頭的售價,對市場衝擊可以想像。說到這邊,筆者腦海裡縈繞的,是那部Cobalt SS頂撞家族老大哥Corvette的廣告畫面,如果真的衝刺起來,又會是怎樣的結果呢?令人期待。
