Thecategory of VOC (Volatile Organic Chemical) includes a number ofchemicals that are both man-made and naturally occurring. Water fromwells and utilities may contain some of these contaminants. Some VOCsare pesticides, herbicides, or insecticides that seep into the groundwater after application. Other VOCs enter the water supply throughindustrial or other waste disposal. This category also includes totaltrihalomethanes, which are a by-product of chlorination.
A VOCreduction claim by the manufacturer means the system reduces theconcentration of all of the following contaminants:

簡單4步驟 破解NSF密碼
步驟1：此淨水器通過NSF第幾號認證？
許多淨水器都標榜通過美國國家衛生基金會（NSF）認證，而NSF認證範圍並不只限於水處理系統，也包含許多容器認證、管線認證及其它項目，所以若看到NSF標章時，必須進一步確認為第幾號認證，是否與淨水器認證有關，以免廠商魚目混珠。
步驟2：取得認證還是符合認證？
許多淨水器廠商宣稱符合NSF/ANSI第42或53號的標準，但事實上只是依據NSF/ANSI的標準進行檢測，並未真正取得美國國家衛生基金會（NSF）所發出的認證，消費者可查看淨水器機身是否有NSF的認證標章（可參考下圖）或上NSF網站（www.nsf.org）查詢確認。
步驟3：是否為全機或組件認證？
若僅為組件認證，則此認證僅代表該淨水器包含某些已單獨認證的組件，但個別的認證組件並不代表整體飲用水器材是由安全的材質製成，也並不能作為整體飲用水器材具有可濾除或降低污染物之產品效能。
步驟4：比較濾淨效果
若有NSF42或53號認證，且為全機認證，濾淨效能仍有差異，此時可濾除的污染物種類多寡為選擇淨水器材參考的指標之一。
另一個參考指標是NSF核可的建議濾淨量，也就是淨水器接受測試污染物的最低濾淨量，以eSpring益之源淨水器為例，濾除的140種以上污染物，每一種的有效濾淨量皆達5,000公升以上，所以eSpring益之源淨水器的優異效能有目共睹。
