“You are Chinese!?”
“I’m from Taiwan!”
A little girl, wearing a Snow White dress, starred at me. I wore a jewelry band, and a skirt decorated with many jingle bells. “Where’s your witch hat?” Kay said. I put the witch hat on the branch of the bamboo by the door to make a plant man.
Outside, they were busy changing a wall and the roof next door. Several workers had already worked for two days. A large cupboards, material, and junk was in the front yard.
It was not dark yet. Twenty minutes before, Kay and I rushed to the store to buy “Trick or Treat” candies.“One pack is enough!” he reminded me, but I still picked up four big bags. All the clerks dressed in costumes. Large pumpkins were sold for $1.99 down from $3.99. Shoppers were getting ready for the party.
“Pon~ Pon~ Pon~,” somebody knocked at the door. I made a “Ho Ho Ho”voice, Kay reminded me again, “It’s not for Christmas”, but his eyes concentrated on the TV screen.Changing my voice to‘Hee~ Hee~ Hee~’, I opened the door to a little batman and city worker, both standing and holding their bags. Behind them, a man was watching in the corner. Their mother was also supervising them.
“Take one more!”
“It’s enough.”, their mother said.
Several groups had come and gone. When they said,“Trick or Treat”, I was unable to form the proper words, I showed them a candy jar and encouraged them to take some. “Happy Halloween!” Kay told me how to reply .When I pass the candies to these kids, their parents were laughing, looking like a ghost wave rushing down the street.
At 9:30PM, we turned off the light!
It’s a kind of funny thing since our children have grown up and left home. I felt alive again to give treats to those kids. Say‘hello’ to them, when the kids dressed in different kinds of costumes and knocked on our door. I felt great. Let them pick candies from the jar, and I waved my hands to the adults until they left. It was a safe, fun, and happy night!
