Many of them are unfaithful and care not whether the Indians live or die… Perhaps some unholy, unprincipled men would cry out, “the skin was not good enough”; but stop, friends—I am not talking about the skin but about principles… By what you read, you may learn how deep your principles are. I should say they were skin-deep.  (p.484, 488)

America Literature Reflection Week 7

Following last week’s “surprise”, what embrace me this week as I read through the pages is “astonishment”.  And though the pressure of midterm is approaching, I could somehow sense my loving toward literature grows.  The reason is literature does broaden my world bigger.  Like what I mentioned last week, I’ve also learnt about the natives.  I even went to the “crazy horse” last summer, watching the movie clips, hearing their stories, buying souvenir and donating some money.  However, through reading the literature, no matter is autobiography or document or stories, it does me to deeper understanding for the whole thing.  Is more than knowing in my brain, like “Indians are poor”; but a realization deep in the heart—they are the oppressed minority.  I am taking the class of multicultural education at the same time; we also discuss the minorities in our society, whether in aspects of social status, economic, power, education, gender, race, etc.  But to be honest, I do believe is through literature, the story through certain rhetoric tone, that makes the knowledge in textbook meaningful.  Through reading the sad stories of the minorities in America in almost two hundred years ago, I finally realize that foreign marriage—one of the new but fast growing minority in Taiwan—are minorities not because they are intellectually poor or lazy; they are not BAD.  They just need some time to adjust the difficult environment: hard economic circumstances for most of the family, new language, but with limited time.  Through reading the literature, I began to sympathy with them.  I doubt I can do any better than them.  Similarly, just like the Indians, they are not bad; they are, from certain aspect, innocent victim of the “outside” war.  Nowadays, through the process of social reproduction, they are still the minorities.  We know but we don’t care!  But maybe there is still hope.  Literature does have the power to touch our deepest feeling and sympathy.  Education does make a difference.  There is always hope, for we to go forward!!

Rip Van Winkle, however, is quite funny and interesting! I love the narrative about Nicholas Vedder’s dominant role and action in the inn (though this is not the most important part of the story, but it is my favorite).  Another interesting part, which is also ironic, is the first question raised by the new generation, “which side he voted?”.  And as Rip answered as the old fashion “a loyal subject of the King, God bless him!”, they shouted as finding the answer to identify the strange man, “A Tory! A spy! A refugee! Away with him!”  It is surprising how the small village, a symbol of the community, nation, and even a world, can change so dramatically in the short twenty years.  But this is the reality.  And it is also fascinating to compare this work to the story of ancient China—黃柯一夢.
