I went to see the gallery show in the Deitch Projects here in SOHO New York before I watched the movie. The show makes more sense to me after watching the film.

The front door of the gallery looks exactly the same as the video tape store in the movie. And, everyone can borrow a video camera and shoot films with the props in the show. The most memorable one for me is a setup of a seat and window in the train. There are three kinds of movies(like trees passing by) you can choose to project on the window. So, if you video tape the scene, it will look like you are really inside a train. I think it is just brilliant. This can be also seen in the real movie.
It is innovative. It shows that even though you don’t have a lot of budgets, you can still make movies. Besides, it gives us an idea about how real film makers shoot films.

I think the film also tries to compare a traditional video tape store and a modern dvd store. Although more and more people go to dvd stores nowadays, it is the local store that has more classic collection and more human warmth.

Also, I like the idea of the whole community participating in the film making. It’s like the rock horror picture show.

The movie is directed by Michel Gondry, who also directs ”eternal sunshine for the spotless mind”.
