At a time when the sales of full size SUV such as Chevy Tahoe and Ford Expedition tumbles, Jeep is launching its first full size SUV, the Commander. It is a full size 7-passenger SUV many Jeep aficionados been waiting for. But when the gas prices hovering around the $3.00 mark, can this new Commander provide enough virtues to combat the rising fuel costs?

Our test route includes long stretch of highway and forest trails around Philadelphia. The highway ride is smooth and compliant; the big HEMI V8 provides more than adequate power. The new Commander’s cabin is quite and comfortable. The only gripe we can find regarding this vehicle is its low fuel economy.

When we arrived at the designated testing ground, we were surprised by the roughness of the trails. These trails are filled with gravels, boulders, tree stumps, etc. With experts’ help, we wade through these trails without a hitch. The smart full time all wheel drive and the 5-speed automatic-transmission handled these tasks with ease. Once again, we were impressed by the Jeep’s ease at handling off road terrains.

Commanders prices are ranging from $27k to top of the line $38,900. For adventure seeking public who needs 7 seats in their vehicles, this new Jeep Commander would be a really good choice.
