When Mercedes introduced the CLS last year, people were awed. This is a beautiful automobile not constrained by traditional image of coupe or sedan. The form is both organic and sporty. Sort of like a cheetah hunched down low waiting to pounce on it’s pray. I couldn’t wait to get my hand on one.

It is very hard to describe the exterior of the CLS. The wave like belt line dominated the look of this car. The low slit side windows accentuated this wave like form. Open up the thick, heavy door and slide into the soft driver’s seat, one cannot be helped but impressed. Every surface in the cabin is either covered with wood or supple leather. The test car is equipped with every electronic gadget imaginable from Mercedes’ COMMAND system to the new adaptive cruise control.

Power comes from Mercedes’ 5 liter V8 engine mated to a 7 speed automatic transmission. This is a very refined power train combination. Speed pick up smoothly and silently; one can cruise all day in the triple digit speed zone without notice it. Dual Control Airmatic suspension soaks up bumps and dips like a luxury Persian carpet.

This is not an ideal car to attack tight mountain roads. It handles better than most large sedans, but it still cannot overcome its physical limitation. It is best used as a boulevard cruiser. The head turning style and the shining 3 pointed star will make you the center of all attention.

This is a beautiful automobile whether one classify it as coupe or sedan. The shape induced small back seats only accentuate its uniqueness. This is a stylish personal transportation for people who can appreciate its unique style. One can drive it home for mere $65,000.
