Movie Review: Marvin’s Room

Two webs of subjects are deftly interwoven in Marvin’s room: the poor mother-child interactions and the long-lost relations between two sisters. Hank, at the age of rebellion, rubs his mother in the wrong way whenever they encounter. Both appear to feel dissatisfied with each other, but neither of them do actually shy away from the attempts to improve their relationships. Bessie serves as just the lubricant, greasing the rusty family machine. For one thing, she has the knack for dealing with Hank; for another, she unintentionally rebuilds her personal interplay between herself and her sister, Lee. Thus, due to her genuine way of communication with others, the whhole family is tied again.

Movies are more often than not true to life. Marvin has been laid up in bed for approximately two decades. His two daughters can be forgiven for not taking care of him and sending him instead to the nursing home. Perhaps it’s Lee’s fault not to lift a finger to attend on his father. In a sense, however, this is more than compensated by the fact that she has been yearning for her own happiness, whether she wins it or not. On the other hand, Bessie goes all out to care for her ailing dad, at the sacrifice of her youth. Silly as that may seem, doesn’t it touch the bottom of our hearts.

As shown in the movie, individualism sours the interpersonal relations. Alienation takes charge of the worldly society and affection is almost a castle in the air. Sometimes it calls for a little more time and effort to better one’s connections with the outer world. Never will indifference make the best policy to lead, to taste, and to enjoy one’s life.
