有時候, 大家都會覺得自己在某個範疇裡面很有經驗, 蠻有自信地認為自己已經擁有一定的知識....這時候反而最危險. 因為很多時候, "井底蛙" 才會以為自己已經懂得見過一切. 真正知道世界有多大的人, 深知暫時根本還有太多的未知在等待著自己, 而且, 答案是只有自己去找才會出現.
也有些時候, 大家對某事作了總結後, 就真的不能接受其他的可能性. 好像這陣子研究院裡的人們開始發現愛因斯坦E=mc^2 中的c未必真的會永遠維持不變 (a side note: If c, the speed of light, is not always a constant, it's like the foundamentals of the relativity theory are starting to shake because then the relationship between mass and energy is not ALWAYS the same as humans thought before..) 一樣, 有很多事, 真的可以很出乎意料. 這些事, 有時可以是很切身地發生在自己身上.
其實因為今日下午又去field trip, 所以才會想起這些.
And so let me talk about my field trip and I cannot use Chinese anymore because I have no energy to figure out all those terminologies.
This is my second outdoor experimental trip. We went to a forestland this time. On my way, I kept on telling my classmate, who has an English masters degree form University of Wincosin, Madison, about my hometown Macau's rural areas. I basically was comparing Macau to California, and as you guys can predict probably, this is two different places. She is a very active young woman, and she knows a lot about plants and vegetations. Her explanation is that she always hikes since she was young at her hometown, somewhere near Mississippi. Nearly 70% of the plants I pointed and asked about she has a clue what are them. I am particularly interested at the trees and shurbs, and as I recall now, I've learnt firmly (and many trails and errors) how to distinguish the beautiful Valley Oak between Coast life oaks, Poison Oak with Raspberries, Willows with Elderberry, Coyote Bush with California Bay.....
Cool. Every tree is just a tree to me before, and now my world is again a little wider because every tree is unique to me from now on. The teacher is even more amazing: she simply picked and tasted any plants that she thinks she knows about. Or I should say, she knows about (without "she thinks"). She did her graduate works with the wild deers up on the mountains for years, and she nearly died of a disease she got from a bite from ticks....and during our trip, she even discoverd two pieces of animal bones, and....she asked me to hold them for her for a while. I ...didn't say no but I realized at that moment that I am not yet too ready to be a field biologist!
At the end, from being so shocked to see the free minded westerns eating every grass they think is interesting to taste to a follower who also picked a leaf from the minners lettuce and taste it, I felt like climbing out of a deep well. Perhaps I am stuck at a well built by my own conservative values? Or perhaps it's my culture that shaped my behaviour and heart at the same time?
Something that makes me feel happier during this trip among tall grasses and bees and anmial wastes: the scent from the leaves of the Californi Bay is so similar to that of a cola cola candy! I was carrying one during the whole time of the trip with me and imagine that I am eating candy. However, some of my classmates hated that smell....they didn't think it smells like candy though. Well, diffferent noses...
On our way back, one classmate was telling us about her research project theme on algaes. To me, all algaes are the same again. I know they're not, but...who cares for algaes?!
Although
I begin to have an amplified strong sense that ignorance is a big barrier to a real life.
But I doubt how many people know that what a real life is.
井底蛙之所以是井底蛙, 因為它們不知道自己在井內.
可能..不知者不罪?
