My experience of learning English
Learning English is one of my unsuccessful and successful learning experiences I have ever been through. In the phase, it was frustrated and disappointed. In the second phase, my English level swung between fluency and influency. In the third phase, I not only stabilized my English level, but also I developed English learning SOP (standard operation procedure) applied the mother tongue learning process and skills of mass production. From my small scale of experiment, I am confident that this SOP can help those who are not language gifted students form a fluent and stable English thinking system between three hundred hours to four hundred hours.
Why my English learning experience was unsuccessful from thirteen-year-old to twenty three-year-old? First of all, I never fully understood the meaning of any article I had studied, no matter how many words I memorized or how much time I spent on looking up my dictionary. Secondly, English grammar for me was a group of puzzles; I was not capable to solve them. Third, neither my teachers nor my classmates can show me how to study English to get even a pass score. I also looked up many books to find out the secret of English learning, I was very disappointed that these books only showed me what to do but not how to do. In second, form 1993 to 1996, my English learning experience mixed up with great pain and gain. I immigrated to Canada in August 1993, two months after I got my bachelor degree in Taiwan. Suddenly, I realized my English too poor to qualify a minimum wage job. I forced myself to go back to school even I had lost my passion to learn. I began to take English 059 in VCC and spent at least an hour looking up vocabulary from Collins Cobuild English language dictionary. Three months later, I spoke English fluently without my Chinese system interference. I was proficient enough to discuss the differences between Chinese and Western philosophy with my instructor. Unfortunately, it didn’t last longer than six months. My English fluency went up and down not matter how hard I studied.
In my third phase, from 1997 to 2007, I worked in Taiwan and became a tutor to help my friends learn English. Day by day, I began to question myself why English is so difficult to be proficient at. Moreover, I began researching and developing a simple system for English learning. After seven years of hard working, I found the gaps of English learning and myths of English for Chinese. Then, I developed an English training SOP applied and integrated the process of mother tongue learning and the mass production methodology used to train operators of assembly line. The purpose of this SOP is for dummies like me, not for geniuses. Hence, my test students are either too old to believe that they can learn English well, or too frustrated by previous English learning experience that they lose interest to learn it. After they are trained by my system, most of them see the progress in twenty hours and see hopes to be a fluent English user.
Learning English is not a happy and enjoyable process to me. It is also not a successful experience in my first fifteen years period. However, I don’t give up and finally upgrade my frustration, knowledge, and wisdom to develop a SOP which I hope can benefit those who are not English gifted students.
