Maori Legend

How Maui found his mother

How Maui slowed the sun

Bttle of the Mountains
Lake Taupo

Peter Gossage for Josephine, still my lovely wife after all these years.

How Maui defied the goddess of death

For my mother Rita, an artist,

and my father Basil, an actor,

who gave me the love, privilege and education to be able to produce these books.

How Maui found his father and the magic jawbone

To all the mothers and fathers

who take the time to read this book with their children.

The fish of Maui

For my brother-in-law Ross Aitken(the big fisherman),

his lovely wife Myra, and their 8 children and 13 grandchildren.

In the Beginnig

How Maui found the secret of fire

Maori Legend books

Maori warrior called "Roha"

Once a time, there was a maori warrior called "Roha". Roha came from a great line of chiefs (Roayalty) in his tribe. One day he was out, by his self, amount of the tree's in the forest.  He was very happy, as the day was hot and the forest was alive with plants and he could hear the birds singing to him, and the rabbits, hopping beside him.  Always well for him in the forest.  So much in througt that he did't notice a beutiful girl from the nabouring village, watching him, she was the most beutiful women in her tribe.  Long black hair, clear little brown skin, slim but firm body shape. Roha for a time was so in thought with nature that everything else did not excit

Roha new the forest, he new each and evey little part of the forest, as he grow up him and his friends played there.  So roha new where to hind and where to find water.  While he was walking in the forest, he became hot and ventured off to visist his favourate stream. Water was on his mind, not the beutiful women following him.As roha neared the stream, he could hear a strange noise behind him.

Quickly looking around, he found nothing. Continuing on down to the stream and drinking  water.
He could see a beutiful reflection of a woman in the water.  Keeping still to admit her beauty in the water, roha could not move for the sight of her, was overwhelming.  As she called his name, he began to raise and his heart was full with same thing he could not explain, roha's body was still like the great tree's around them.

Speechlessness, they both stood there, looking, watching and smiling at each other, happy to be there, alone in the forest on a warm day with the birds singing and the animals talking there talk about them.
Both Roha and Aroha, could feel a special bond between them.  In that moment, in the forest, among the tree's. Love was found.

The power they both had never felt before.Roha knelt be the stream and filled his drinking bottle with the clear, cool fresh water.Aroha walked down to the stream, standing across of Roha, watching and waiting to see his reaction. Roha never took his eye's off Aroha,

With a smile and a warm look in his eye's, reached up to offer Aroha a drink from his water bottle. The day was warm and the stream was the cleanest and safest water to drink.

As she reached for the bottle, Roha stood up and pulled his hand away, with a checkie (joking) smile, they both broke out laughing.

From that day on, the relationship between,

Roha the maori warrior and Aroha the beautifully maori princess has been filled with adventure, excitement, joy and happiness.

During the summer, there relationship would grow and grow. They would always meet down by the stream, before leaving on their next adventure, creating their own fun, being together made their love grow for each other. No matter what happen.

How New Zealand got it's maori name  -  AOTEAROA.

Kupe, A great chief a his tribe on the Island of Hawaiki.  Travelled across the ocean with his wife and family, Hine te aparangi and three daughters, and many of his trible people.

For many days and nights they travel the ocean, guided by the sun, the moon and the stars. They would watch for shadows in the clouds and there changing shapes, birds such as sea gulls that lived around the coast lines of Islands.

One day as Hine te aparangi stood watch, saw in the distances a cloud formotion that stretched far and wide across the blue sky,  Calling to kupe,

HE AO, HE AO, HE AOTEAROA,

Kupe came straight to her and could see the  LONG WHITE CLOUDS.  Their discovery of these clouds would lead them to this land and forever leave the name  AOTEAROA.

Exploring and discovering many areas of Aotearoa (New Zealand) lead them decide, these two islands were the largest they have ever encountered.

Giving birth to the name,

LAND OF THE LONG WHITE CLOUDS.

That is how New Zealand,  AOTEAROA,  land of the long white clouds. was give it's maori name.

offered to us.
So tonight Grace I would like to offer WHAKATAUKI or PROVERBS.
Proverbs that inspire us and help us lead a better life.

HE TANE I TE MAHI KAI,  MOEA.      HE TANE I TE MOHO WHARE,  KURUA TE TAKATAKA.
A man who provides,  gives merrily.      A man who sit's in side all day,  smashers his head.

KAUA E WHAI I NGA AHUATANGA PAI.
Be not the slave of first impressions.

HE TOA MANU RAKAU HE TOKA PIRINGA,   HE TOA MAHI RAKAU WHAKAMARUMARU.
A warrior is a rock of defence,  But an industrious warrior is a sheltering tree.

HE HONO TANGATA E KORE E MOHI,   KA PA HE TAURA WAKA E MOTU.
A human bond cannot be severed,  But a canoe rope may snap.

KO TE RINGA TORO O TE TANE,  HEI URUNGA MO TE WAHINE.
Let the outstreched arm of the man,  Be the pillow of the woman.

My Maori Friend-Roger Simon share Maori story
