這劇名翻譯得沒錯，就是＜卡洛琳，或零錢＞
底下有介紹這劇的一篇文字，看得我熱血沸騰，連貓或Phantom 都不想看的我，第一次對 Broadway show 產生興趣。我一定會去紐約看這齣戲。

由黑女佣卡洛琳和小主人待洗衣物中的零錢開始營釀的戲劇張力，竟然可以成為 順利自 off broadway 移植到 broadway 的歌舞劇，實在太神奇了，一定要看，一定要看。

其實這劇名真的很難譯, 因為是雙關語, 又代表民權運動時代的文化與社會變革,又指涉劇中的”零錢”符號.

This is a story about changes which are more to be borne than welcomed -- changes wrought by the death of a mother and wife, a bad relationship, or admired leaders like John F. Kennedy and Medgar Evers who were killed during the November through December 1963 period during which Caroline, or Change takes place.

The rift is triggered by mislaid small change and one twenty dollar bill. If this sounds rather trivial and mundane, Kushner adroitly uses this to show money to be the villain of the piece, the barrier that precludes real friendship between people whose connection to each other is a paycheck (the meagerness of that paycheck dictated by racial discrimination). The parallels between the changes in the lives of the two families and the larger events in the town and the rest of the country are drawn with wit and admirable restraint from sermonizing....The change of the title refers to the cultural revolution but also refers to money that Noah deliberately leaves in his pockets following
a dictum by Rose that any change will be lost to him if he is careless.
Caroline takes the coins, but doing so is repugnant to her. Her weakness for wanting her children to have the extra money torments her.

dear 小讀者
我對英語世界（因為外語中我只通英語）劇作的劇名一直覺得饒富趣味，因為完全表現出拼音文字與中文這種一字一音／義的語系的各別特色。
我唸書時代的一齣常被台灣劇場學生拿來自行翻譯及搬演的美國劇，The Dumb Waiter（作者應是 Pinter），那時因為文化隔闔，所以我學弟畢製時將之譯為啞侍者。如果對照文本來看，這麼譯是沒錯的，雖然我也沒法看他的戲所以當時無法做更多的判斷－－但是其實住過美國、愛上餐館吃飯的傢伙應該都可以知道，dumb waiter是指（其實在劇本中的舞台指示裏即有）那個載送菜及剩盤的小電梯；這玩意兒台灣餐館其實也用。
但是對大學生來說，誰知道呢？但是我們的指導老師留美，他應該不可能不知道。他允許我學弟如此翻譯劇名，可推知這 Dumb Waiter 本來就是作者取劇名時的一個雙關語。
the Change 必然也是如此。
但是翻譯劇名（例如若將之移至台灣來中文化演出）時該怎麼辦呢？用零錢，還是用改變？改變當然是作者選擇銅板／零錢這個意象／隱喻之承載物（兼小道具）的指涉目標。但是你要取其實際plain的意義（何況它確實 act as 道具），還是隱喻的意義？那就牽涉到導演如何詮釋。
在鐵志先生的文章中如果只是介紹這齣戲，就完全不牽扯到導演的interpretation 權的問題，只需就最 plain 的文字意義來翻譯。所以我並不認為他的翻譯有任何問題。
當然您所說的＜很難譯＞可視為詮釋權層面的問題，您也可以找劇本來看或翻譯，相信您在譯的過程中會得到更多 ambiguity 的、多層次的文字樂趣。 ^_^

漏貼第一段文字中很重要的一句, 有關Caroline的:
This is Caroline’s story, her dissatisfaction with life coupled with her resistance to and discomfort with change and her very timid first step towards accepting it.
也許這正是為什麼劇名用”or”之故吧
Caroline是平凡人, 有她對生活與人生與社會制度的私下抱怨, 但她不是革命家, 一方面為了養兒育女為了生活, 一方面又因為習於自己的身份地位(帶給她穩定的收入), 她代表著不變的一面. 但是面對時代之變與零錢這兩項Change, 兩項挑戰都令她為難卻又不容她抗拒.

抱歉，我學弟當年譯的劇名是＜啞待者＞，非侍者。
其實他的翻譯非常巧妙又聰明，既以＜字形形似＞點出實物、又點出其義。

「change：找頭;零錢;輔幣；…….」各有其不同的意義；姑且不談change其它豐富諸義。HC基本的看法是這change一翻譯就「俗」、「死」了，可能有背（stone 按：應用＜悖＞較佳）劇作大家當初的用心。

基本上我同意你的說法.
不過你舉的dumb waiter一例,與類似的lazy Susan等詞都只是單義,並沒有”雙義”的考量, 它們是以擬人化的意象來直指目標物. 中譯可採直譯或意譯. 容我外行亂用術語: dumb waiter is a signifier signifying the signified, a small elevator used to convey food or other goods from one floor of a building to another
可是這個劇名則不然, 它乃是通過Change一字的”雙”義. 零錢本身並不等於改變, 做為零錢的Change並不指涉做為改變的Change, 它們乃是分別做signifiers, 共同指涉Caroline的處境. The one ”change” does not signify the other ”change”. They both signify the dilemma, moral or social, that Caroline finds herself in.
我以為那位作者也許應該稍作一點解釋.
