My belief of our roles as counselors is to be a teacher, expert and a friend of our clients in an attempt to help them to search for wholeness and completeness. To me, counseling is a process which can help normal clients to see and understand their problems.
That counseling is a process which can help normal clients to see and understand their problems means two ideas. First, it indicates that we should see our clients as normal persons and respect them. Corey (1991) believes that the philosophy of counseling does not include the assumption that therapy is exclusively for the sick and is aimed at curing psychological ailments (1991). Except those people who have suffered with organic mental disorder, people who come to see counselors are not necessary sick person. They may feel lonely, aloof, hopeless, and full of questions. Some of them may lose their power to solve their problems. Nevertheless, they are not sick . Thus, we need to be their friends to support them. To me, Rogers' idea that counselors should be genuineness, empathy, and positive regard to our clients is not only a slogan. It should be one of our believes which can guide us when helping our clients.
Second, counseling is a process implies that, (a), Clients should realize that life is a process of learning, not a product. They may choose to begin a new life by understanding the meaning of this world and by mastering their mental power to help themselves to live in this world, (b), Counselors should also realize that we should not finish helping clients after the end of the session. Therefore, we always need to follow up our client's new situations. More than that, "there will be no end of our helping clients to solve their problems" should also be a belief for us as a counselor.
Like Rogers, I believe that every individual has a vast potential to understand himself and resolving his problems. Furthermore, they can face their lives courageously by mastering their mental powers. Therefore, our role is to be clients' teacher to teach them how to fully master their mental powers.
