BELCHERTOWN, Mass. (UPI) -- A Massachusetts man whose family traveled to India for a bride for his son is suing the woman’s relatives because she allegedly was too ugly.

The Boston Herald said the Pandey family were friends with a couple from Maryland, Lallan and Kanti Giri, who suggested that Pandey’s 37-year-old son Pranjul, propose to their niece, Savita Giri.

In his lawsuit, Dr. Vijai Pandey of Belchertown, Mass., claims his wife, son and daughter were "shocked" to discover the Indian woman was "ugly with dark complexion and protruded bad teeth and couldn’t speak English to carry on conversation."

In August 2003, Pranjul, his mother and sister traveled to New Delhi, India, to meet Giri. After they described her alleged appearance to Pandey, he told his wife to "politely tell Savita’s mother that marriage was off."

Pandey is suing for $200,000 to cover travel expenses, other expenses and emotional distress.

The Giris did not return a message left at their home, the newspaper said.
