【Book Biz】Leading Quietly

The book [Leading Quietly] is written by Joseph L. Badaracco, Jr. Mr. Badaracco is a professor of Harvard Business School. This book discusses some practical managerial methods, instead of teaching people a lot of “ leaders’ principles.” The most difference between these two concepts is “humanity.” Sometimes, we must recognize that the true world isn’t beautiful, but we still have to live and make things done, so that we have to learn or to understand something about human behaviors, or in another word, human nature.

The author introduced several cases that he researched in the past few years. In each case, the leader faced a difficult management problem, like having to decide how to make someone with scandal quit (get out of the company) QUIETLY and PEACEFULLY, in case to make another big trouble in the organization; how to make a decision when sales goal and the moral hazard conflict with each other, and how to decide who will be layoff. By observing some managers, he told readers that the real leaders with leadership are those who behind heroes--- such as anonymous middle-level managers. They execute a lot of things quietly and must fill up the gap between subordinates and top managerial level. Besides, those who lead quietly are realists, they don’t make a high-sounding talk; instead, they care about the balance between human nature and companies’ benefits. They try to understand what people think, instead of what saints think!

After reading this researching paper, I've understood something about the true working environment. In fact, what I face now and what I have learned from my job are similar to what the author described. Real career environment is full of managerial dilemmas, and sometimes it’s not a problem of the processes or the working methods, but the weakness of human nature. I think that I can exactly appreciate some insights of his viewpoints. I strongly recommend you this book to enlarge your concepts of leading.
