In the beginning of 2003, the first milestone in the Wang family was my dear mother’s retirement from public service. She had worked in Taipei City Government for 32 years. What a long time it was! So it absolutely is worth remembrance.

My mother was a police. It is amazing for some friends to hear that at first time. I have to admit that it’s sort of cool, but not that great! This is a very tiring job. Police’s working hours is long, and they work in a rotation system, which means you are not sure to be off duty on the weekend, or not sure to always work during the day. I cannot believe that my mother spent her most time of life in this kind of “cool” job. But she survived, and she did a very very good job. She now can still run 3000m with youngsters, and can get standard score in shooting, even when she’s over 50. The biggest regret for her career was that she didn’t attend to police officer school to get the chance for rising in rank. It was all for our family! She gave the school up for caring her family first. So what she’s hoped sincerely to we brothers was to study hard and to get higher degree. In her experience, that might be good for our career in the future.

After retiring from her job, Mother starts her relaxing life. She is so excited that she needn’t worry about office biz. Besides, she can now sleep to death until she feels “enough.” It’s also good without working in the midnight. For me, I think that I can eat more dinner made by her is my best benefit. We family will have a real reunion in the lunar New Year's Eve in 2005 if lucky (after my brother retiring from marine, it seems in a later time, but if mom didn’t retire, it will delay!). Today my mother cooked lunch for me, and I told her that I haven’t for a long time eaten lunch made by her during weekdays. She just smiled, but I knew she understood what I meant.

Although she left government, she didn’t leave serving people. Now, she has a new job, the head of a basic community unit (鄰長). I feel it’s a meaningful position to devote herself in the community. Besides, my brother and I will keep supporting her.

Mom, congratulations for retirement! It’s a new start for life. Just enjoy it!
