It’s the most influential book to me in the past half year, and that’s why I chose it to comment in my first episode of . The author of this book is Oren Harari, professor of McLaren Graduate School of Business (Uni. of San Francisco). Harari is also a management consultant and a columnist of <>, <>, <>, and <>. Professor Harari emphasized that this book isn’t an autobiography of Colin Powell, but an entry-level book about leadership.

Who is Colin Powell? He is the most powerful “secretary” in the world, the Secretary of the United States. Nowadays, it might say that he’s the power of keeping wars away from the world, as George W. Bush counting more on his words than on Rumsfeld’s. Powell, 65 (1937~), born in New York, is a descendant of Jamaican immigrants. He had served in the military for about 30 years. He got a lot of titles during his military life, absolutely a legend of officers. Moreover, he is a benchmark of leadership either in the army or in the government.

Allow my skipping of the book content. I want to discuss more about the spirit of Powell’s leadership and the secrets of his success in leading. “The high moral standard,” said the author, is Powell’s philosophy in life. When giving a speech about “How to be a good leader?” to the public, Powell makes much of character, courage, confidence, loyalty, and caring. As an Africa American, he is apt to say so, because he has struggled out from unfair treatment with these components. Today, after a lot of business scandals, people doubt the truths more than before. They also don’t know who is reliable, and whose words are believable. How can people run an organization properly and efficiently if there are full of selfishness and mistrust? It’s a simple sense, but it looks only some top groups can make it. Powell has performed these disciplines very well and has successfully influenced his staff. He said that the leadership is a power of influence, persuasion, and motivation. This concept is my Bible of leading, and it’s really touching my heart.

Colin Powell is also an optimistic person. He suggested people don’t worry about inner fears and don’t be afraid of opponents. Optimism is not only a cheer squad, but a real value of life. I totally believe in the power of optimism, and I think friends of mine will agree it! Mr. Powell makes me firmly believe in this attitude. I strongly recommend this book to my audience.
