The aim is to provide the compa nies involved with a means of developing their employees that takes a broad pers pective yet remains clearly relevant to their own business.

Lastly, there are distance-learning pr ogrammes, which get around the problem o f there being too few good teachers to m eet the demand for MBAS. These programme s can be take at an even more remote dis tance from a school than the part-time p rogrammes, and they take even longer. Pr epackaged learning materials are sent to students to study at home, and they spe nd occasional residential weeks and week ends on campus. The Internet has given a boost to distance learning, with the us e of e-mail, CD-ROM, computer networks, communication systems （such as Lotus No tes） and videoconferencing. Many school s provide personal tutors, telephone hot lines, summer schools, weekend seminars and local support groups. But beware: di stance learning can be a lonely activity .

5.How much will it cost？
Fees vary enormously, depending on the type of programme and the business scho ol chosen. Annual tuition fees alone at some American schools are over $25,000. A one-year course at INSEAD can easily s et you back some $45,000 in fees and liv ing costs. On top of this is the opportu nity cost of lost earnings while followi ng a fulltime MBA programme.

7.Which school is most suitable？
Having considered question 1-6 it is n ow time to choose a school. A 1999 surve y by the Economist Intelligence Unit fou nd a number of criteria cited by MBA gra duates as their reason for choosing one school rather than another. The reputati on of the school was the most important, with more respondents outside Europe an d North America rating this highly. Prog ramme content came second, with more in Europe and North America rating this hig hly. Third came location, although this is clearly not particularly relevant for distance learning.

Is should not be surprising that the r eputation of the school comes top of the list. MBA graduates increasingly find t hat having an MBA is not enough in a wor ld where so many people have them. Emplo yers are more interested now in where th e MBA is from. This has made the busines s schools more competitive, and more con cerned about the quality of their course s.

If, however, by now you have decided t hat you cannot cope with an MBA. do not despair. Management education should not be something that is packed into one he ctic, expensive ten-month period （or ev en a 21-month period） early in a manage r’s career. It should be a continuous p rocess for life that any employer worth working for will be monitoring and encou raging at all times.
萬一你讀到這裡已經覺得自己無法應付企管碩士的要求，不必氣餒。經理人學習管理不應僅限於在職業生涯初期時，去念一個讓人忙得不可開交，且又昂貴的10個月（甚或1年9個月）課程。管理學習應該是活到老，學到老。任何一位值得員工效命的雇主，應隨時監督並鼓勵員工終身學習管理知識。
