Long ago, the birds and the animals were at war. They fought many battles. During one battle, Bat fought on the birds’side. But things didn’t go well for the birds that day. When BAT realized the birds might lose, he flew up into a tree and hung upside down.

When the fighting was over and the animals had won. Bat decided to go home with them. Lion noticed this and said, “Bat, why are you coming with us? You were fighting against us!”

“Oh, no,” said Bat. “I wouldn’t do that. I’m one of you. I’m an animal. Look at my teeth. None of the birds have teeth.”

The animals agreed that this was true, so they let Bat go with them. Not long after that, there was another battle. When the birds started to win, Bat hid under a log and waited till the fighting was over. As the birds flew home, Bat went right along with them.

“Wait a second,” said Eagle. “You’re one of our enemies! I saw you fighting on the animals’ side.”
“Oh, no,” said Bat. “You’re wrong. I’m not an animal. Just look at my wings. Have you ever seen an animals with wings?”

The birds had to admit that this was true, so they let Bat go home with them. As long as the war lasted, Bat went home with winning side each day.

By the end of the war, the animals and birds were furious with Bat. They got together and held a big council to decide what to do. At last they said, “Bat, you lied to us. We don’t want to see you again. From now on, you will fly only at night.”

To this day, the birds and animals have not forgiven Bat. He still flies alone at night.
