In the book Angels Demons , by Dan Brown, there is a very special character, who is the camerlengo. He is the antagonist and one of the main characters of the book. As a camerlengo and the one behind a series of murder, his temperaments make him more complex and special. The camerlengo is very pious and resourceful, get he is also very prejudiced.
First, the camerlengo is extremely pious. There is nothing in his mind without his god. As evidence, he said in page 672, “ there is no rish when God is at your side, this cause was His.” In the book, all the things he has done are for his god. He can’t allow anybody or anything to betray his god. For this reason, he retaliates science, which betrays his religion in his opinion, without giving any thought. He can sacrifice everything for his God. in effect, he lost his wits and sacrificed his innocence, his future, even his life.
Second, the camerlengo is very resourceful. For instance, he pretends a kind and gentle camerlengo and a poor orphan in front of people; on the contrary, he is a cruel killer. He uses an ancient religion group which called illuminati. Then he finds a killer and asks him to help the camerlengo kill the people for reprisal. He plans many wonderful but cruel methods to kill the cardinals secretly. There is even lot information hidden in the methods. It needs a very knowledgeable person like Robert Landon to solve, and it’s even not so easy for him. At last, he achieves his goal successfully – warning up people and saving souls in his opinion.
But, the camerlengo is very prejudiced as well. He hates the science extremely because he thinks the science profanes the God. As the words he said, “Man cannot put God’s Creation in a test tube and wave it around for the world to see!” (p.658), it shows he hates the science extremely. There is only his religion in his mind. Consequently, he retaliates the science blindly. He tries his best to kill the success of science for his religion.
In summation, the camerlengo is an extremely pious, prejudiced and resourceful character. Those points make him more special and complex. Also, they make the novel more interesting and the theme much clearer.
