America Literature Reflection Week 9

Our age is retrospective… Why should not we have a poetry and philosophy of insight and not of tradition, and a religion by revelation to us, and not the history of theirs? There are new lands, new men, new thoughts. (p.493)

Time goes on.  After the midterm, we come to the article written around 1840.  Though “God” is still mentioned and some story of Bible is used like Joseph fleeing from Potiphars’ wife, many core of puritan thinking, like awe of God and work ethic, no longer exists.  Since the articles are long and the time are limited, I didn’t finish all the article but did some google research.  I found that Emerson, mentioning in the several times in the previous introduction (1820-1865) as a important figure, is the leader of Transcendentalism.  Believing the inherent goodness of both man and nature, they think it is best when men be truly "self-reliant" and independent, especially from the corruption (dead) of society.  This knowledge corresponds and somehow summarizes my reading of Nature and Self-reliance.  For example, from Nature, Emerson first claims the new authority for the new world, despising the old world like believing God always—the puritan thinking.  Then he elaborates how his egotism vanishes when he is in Nature (no matter looking at stars or being in the forest).  “I am nothing. I see all… I am part or particle or God.”  He somehow becomes God Himself.  Since everyone possess the innate character of God, which is contrary to puritan believe or the origin sinful nature, we can be self-reliance, believe ourselves—“believe you own thought, to believe that what is true for you in your private heart”—and don’t care the “dead church” nor “contribute to a dead Bible-Society”. This further leads to the idea of individualism, the pursuit of self-actualization rather than God’s will or redemption.  I don’t believe this “the world globes itself into a drop of dew” philosophy.  But I can’t deny the significant change Emerson brought to the not only literature world but cultural value and belief.  And I am still glad I can have the chance to read and know this important article.

In Henry’s Walden, he criticizes the “blind obedience to a blundering oracle”, which I believe is the same thing done for the puritan “hard-working” ethic.  “But worst of all when you are the slave-driver yourself.  Talk of a divinity in a man!”  Stop living a fool’s life of desperation is what Henry calls.  I like the description of “he has not time to be any thing but a machine”.  Actually, I think many college students still have this problem today.  Though we are not busy working for life, but we are always busy “doing” something, instead of “thinking” something.  We read textbook to get good grades, hang out with friends to get emotional support, take part-time job to get extra money and gain experience, join club to become “somebody”... Though life may seem “colorful” but may it be possible that it just a combination of different functions machine?  Our schedule is so full that we don’t really have time to stop and think why am I doing all those things.  We are like a “slave driver of ourselves”, wanting to be busy and somebody but never think of the meaning of life, which I think is the most important one.
