八年後，尚萬強成了一家工廠的老闆和Montreuil-Sur-Mer這個地方的市長。
芳婷(Fantine)遭工廠解職。

丟了工作的芳婷(Fantine)十分難過，唱出（I dreamed a dream）一曲，歌詞中回憶年輕時的美好時光。

芳婷為了籌得女兒需要的費用，竟然淪落風塵，出賣起自己的靈肉。
「Fantine被捕」（Fantine's Arrest）
芳婷與一位尋芳客發生了衝突，隨後被捕，逮捕她的是警官賈維(Javert)。
尚萬強(那時是市長)得知了芳婷的故事，便將她送去醫院，並且幫她照顧女兒。
