【在生活中學習語言】〈 職人英語通〉巨星般禮遇 The red-carpet treatment

不管東西方，禮數總是永遠不嫌多，而且往往愈是慎重愈能讓對方感受到自己的心意。英文裡的用法，通常是在待遇（treatment）前面加上一個形容詞，來表達待遇的層級，譬如皇室般的禮遇（royal treatment）；而如果要表達自己是把對方當作如好萊塢巨星般來款待，當然就可以用大家常在新聞裡看到巨星進場前必定走過的紅地毯（red carpet）來做隱喻。

所以，「紅地毯」般的待遇（red-carpet treatment），就是指你把對方或對方把你當作巨星來款待囉！

Victor：Have our marketing colleagues in Kaohsiung store finalized their special promotion for next month?

Victor：高雄店的行銷同仁已經決定下個月的促銷方案了嗎？

Abby：But March is usually a quiet month. The Valentine’ s promotion is just over, I don’ t think they’ re going to do anything special. Besides, Taiwan consumers will normally wait until April for the big Mother’ s Day Promotions.

Abby：可是3月份通常是淡季，加上情人節檔期剛過，我不認為他們會做任何特別的活動。而且，台灣的消費者通常會等到4月份母親節檔期開始才出手。

Victor：Yeah, I’ ve got your point, but I wasn’ t talking about local customers. I have my eyes on the potential VIP members from Mainland China. Next month, there will be a very big tour of around 1,000 tourists all going to visit the Dream Mall.

Victor：是啊，我懂你的意思，可是我又不是在講本地的消費者。我的目標可是放在來自中國的潛在貴客呢。下個月會有一團將近1000人的觀光客去夢時代參觀。

Abby：Wow, this is a once-in-a-million-year chance, we need to quickly prepare some specially-priced items. Those from China can get a 30% discount.

Abby：哇，這可是千載難逢的大好機會，我們得趕緊準備些特價商品。像是大陸觀光客可以享有7折優惠。

Victor：Yes, we need to give them the red-carpet treatment because they’ re the big spenders. Whenever they go, they boost the local economy.

Victor：對，我們得要給他們巨星般的禮遇才行，因為這些人可都是花錢不眨眼的。他們所到之處對當地經濟可都是一劑強心針呢。

Abby：I’ ll discuss with our colleagues in Kaohsiung again. We won’ t let them leave empty-handed!

Abby：我會跟高雄同事再討論一下。絕不會讓他們空手離開的。
