【在生活中學習語言】畫大餅 Pie in the sky

有些人很喜歡說大話，一張嘴講得天花亂墜，不過全是不切實際的幻想，真正實現的可能性微乎其微，也就是我們中文裡常說的「畫大餅」。按此，若用英文來說，就是 ”pie in the sky（天空中的派）”。

想像一下，一塊餅飄在空中，即便聽起來或看起來再怎麼好吃、感覺香味撲鼻，也都是摸不到吃不著的，所以若想用英文來描述某些遙不可及的夢想，或某些聽聽就好的話時，就可以用這句俚語來做表達。

Matt：I’m quite touched by the CEO’s speech this morning.

Matt：今天總裁的演說真讓我感動呢。

Clive It was as impressive as always. Wouldn’t it be nice if those things he said could be true?

Clive：的確跟以往一樣令人印象深刻。要是他講的那些都是真的該多好啊。

Matt：I do think he has a vision for the company.

Matt：我真的認為他是對公司有遠見的人。

Clive：What made you say that?

Clive：怎麼說呢？

Matt：Well, he was talking about the future direction, investments in other emerging markets, employee’s benefits, the company’s potential in the industry …etc.

Matt：他提到未來的方向，在新興市場的投資，員工的福利，以及公司在產業界中的潛力等等。

Clive：And you really buy those stories?

Clive：你還真都相信啊？

Matt：What do you mean? You don’t?

Matt：什麼意思？你不相信嗎？

Clive： For me, it’s just pie in the sky. He was talking about the same thing last year at the year end party. We didn’t even get any bonus for last year.

Clive：對我來說，那只是畫個大餅而已。去年年終晚會上他也說過一樣的話。但我們去年什麼分紅都沒拿到。

Matt：Well, we didn’t but it’s just because the company is going through a difficult phase. It’ll get much better very soon.

Matt：唉，我們是沒有啦，不過那是因為公司正經歷困境的階段，很快就會變好的。

Clive：You keep on dreaming. I have better things to do than that now. Got to get ready for the meeting.

Clive：你就繼續做你的大夢吧。我還有更好的事情可以做。本人要去準備開會的事了。
