【在生活中學習語言】〈職人英語通〉假公濟私 To feather one’s own nest

有些人會利用職權上的便利來中飽私囊，而我們也會用「假公濟私」來形容他們。至於英文裡的類似用法則是”to feather one’s own nest! “。

據說，有些鳥會把其他鳥類的羽毛拿來築巢。因為羽毛是最為保暖的素材，用來築巢再適合不過了，只是，這些羽毛畢竟是從別的鳥身上來的，而不是自己的，因此，英文裡就可以用「將羽毛加在自己的巢上」- to feather one’s own nest這句話來表喻「假公濟私」的行徑。

Laura：I thought the CEO was really trying to do something for the company. Reading the news this morning just made me so disappointed.

Laura：我一直以為總裁是真的想替公司做點事情。看到今天早上的新聞真令我失望。

Benny：Who wasn’t? It’s too much of a shock to all of us!

Benny：誰不是呢？對我們大家來說，真的是太令人震驚了！

Laura：I would never have thought he’d been accepting a lot of money under the table.

Laura：我沒想到他收了那麼多檯面下的錢。

Benny：Yes, in fact, I still find it hard to believe…

Benny：是啊，老實說，我到現在還是難以置信……。

Laura：Well, the prosecutor has collected quite a lot of evidence against him.

Laura：檢察官已經收集很多對他不利的證據了。

Benny：Right, even his secretary confessed to have helped him set up private meetings with some of the business owners.

Benny：對啊，連他的秘書都已經承認幫他安排過好多次私下跟企業老闆的會面。

Laura：Thinking back now, all these volunteer work he did for different NPOs (Non-Profit Organizations) were just to feather his own nest.

Laura：現在回想起來，那些他幫非營利組織擔任義工的工作，也只是用來假公濟私罷了。

Benny：Every time when this kind of things happened, it just made trusting and believing in others even harder.

Benny：每次有這類事情發生，總會讓我們更不容易去信賴和相信別人。
