醜聞筆記 (李察艾爾，2006)

人生要面臨什麼樣的關頭才算危機？是結婚十多年後發現自己還有冒險的渴望？還是到了老年還是孑然一身的自己尋找伴侶的絕望？對希芭和芭芭拉而言，這都是她們面臨的危機，而這個危機也將她們緊緊綁在一起。

改編自柔伊海勒的著名小說，劇作家派屈克馬柏繼洞悉愛情的「偷情」後，再度創造出一個結構緊密的劇本，不僅深入刻劃兩個主角的心境，也精采敘述兩人隨著劇情而驟變的微妙關係。

終身都在任教的芭芭拉是標準人人眼中古怪的老處女，看似孤僻冷酷的她其實十分渴望找到一個終生伴侶，只是歲月不饒人，她不再擁有年輕人的大好時光，因此她對維持一段關係的迫切成為反其道而行的最大阻力。

已相夫教子十載的希芭希望藉由教職找回自己對生命的熱情，芭芭拉的友好讓她找到一個家庭外的傾訴對象，並不是因為她特別喜歡芭芭拉，而是芭芭拉是她長久以來唯一可以和外界溝通的管道。

這段看似美好的友誼就因一件醜聞而漸漸走向一個改變兩人未來的結果。芭芭拉的孤獨和希芭的美滿家庭形成強烈對比，卻同時也是兩人急欲脫離的困境，只有兩人對愛戀對象的慾望是完全相同，付諸實現的希芭使芭芭拉心生妒忌，但也是芭芭拉得到關係主導權的契機。

茱蒂丹契和凱特布蘭琪兩大「伊莉莎白女王」爐火純青的演技就能使本片目不暇給，派屈克馬柏傑出的劇本和李察艾爾優秀的執導更使本片在呈現充滿慾望的人性背後多了對現代社會道德標準和人性衝突的省思。

Notes on a Scandal (Richard Eyre, 2006)

What kind of moment in life can be taken as a crisis? Is it to find a desire of adventure after married for over 10 years? Or is it the desperation of finding a partner when being alone at the late years of life? For Sheba and Barbara, these are the crisis they face, and the crisis binds them together tightly.

Adapted from the acclaimed novel by Zoe Heller, after the love-insightful-seeing “Closer,” play writer Patrick Marber created a strictly structured screenplay. Not only it portrays the two main characters deeply but also describes their delicate relationship that changes rapidly with the plots.

Spending all her life teaching, Barbara is the typical spinster in everyone’s eyes. Although she seems isolated and cold, she actually wants to find a lifetime company very badly. Only that time doesn’t wait, she no longer has the great time as younger ones. Therefore, her desperation to keep a relationship instead becomes the biggest obstruction to itself.

Already spending over ten years in family, Sheba hopes to find her own passion to life with the teaching job. Barbara’s friendly gives her an object to talk to. It’s not because she likes Barbara particularly but that Barbara is the only way to communicate with outside in a very long time.

This friendship that seems beautiful is gradually being led to a result that changes both of their lives simply because of a scandal. Barbara’s loneliness and Sheba’s wonderful family form a strong contrast. But it’s also a dead end that both want to get out of. Only the desires for the objects of their affections are totally the same. Sheba makes Barbara jealous by putting it into practice, but it’s also the key point for Barbara to take the lead to this relationship.

The remarkable actings of Judi Dench and Cate Blanchett, the two “Queen Elizabeth,” already make this film beyond rich. The outstanding script by Patrick Marber and the excellent direction by Richard Eyre also make it has an introspection to the conflict between the moral standard in the modern society and humanity behind the presentation of humanity that is full of desire.
