Announcing Selected Objects to Be Presented in
Treasures from Heaven: A Special Exhibition of Artifacts from the Holy See
Following a trip to the Vatican by Director Fung Ming-chu of the National Palace Museum to sign a loan agreement on November 5 bringing loan objects from the Sacristy to Taiwan in Treasures from Heaven: A Special Exhibition of Artifacts from the Holy See,the Apostolic Nunciature and the local Catholic Church have been working closely with the curatorial team at the Museum on various matters related to the exhibit.
This special display is scheduled to run from February 5 to May 2 of next year (2016) and premier in Galleries 105 and 107 of the Museum’s Main Exhibition Building. A total of sixty artifacts from the Holy See are to be displayed with ten historical documents from the Museum collection. The contents are divided into the following six sections:
1. The Holy See
2. The Liturgical Year
3. The Altar
4. The Pope and History
5. The Sacraments
6. Catholicism Spreads East
Together, these categories elaborate on the close relationship between the liturgy of the Roman Catholic Church, the Pope, and the history and development of the Church.
Many of these objects to be loaned from the Holy See represent the finest in craftsmanship and some are hundreds of years old. Not only have they been personally worn or used by the Pope over the ages in liturgical services, very few have ever been put on public display. Liturgy has always been an indispensable part of religion. The Roman Catholic Church, with its rich history and culture, has developed a magnificent set of public services, and Catholics continue to find reverence for God, spiritual consolation, and religious doctrine and spirit in these liturgical activities.
In order to allow the public to catch a glimpse of these treasures, the National Palace Museum has been allowed to announce a select group of ten objects to be displayed in the exhibition. They are “Jeweled Closure,” “Tiara,” “Chalice with Paten,” “Chinese-inspired Chasuble with Stole,” “Processional Cross,” “Red Mantle with Stole,” “Chasuble with Stole,” “Mandyllion of Edessa,” “Ecce Homo: Altarpiece,” and “Reliquary and Relic of St. Francis Xavier.” These examples of sacred clothing and holy objects are not only great works of art but also imbued with deep religious meaning. As the opening of this special exhibition approaches, we look forward to it with anticipation and hope it will mark a new milestone in the museum world.
