'Gigli' leads pack of stinkers in annual bad movie awards;
Affleck, Lopez vie for worst screen couple
Hollywood, CA -- It's a safe bet that Billy Crystal won't be asking America's favorite on-again, off-again celebrity couple, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez, to accept any awards at next month's Academy Awards ceremony. But another film honoring group has singled the pair out for their cinematic achievements in 2003. The Los Angeles-based Bad Cinema Society, a group of movie buffs and critics dedicated to honoring Hollywood's major studio fiascoes, announced nominees in 18 categories for its 26th annual Stinkers Bad Movie Awards. The couple's critically maligned film, "Gigli," received a whopping 11 Stinkers nominations, setting a record for most bad movie nominations from the group. The previous Stinkers champion was 1999's "Wild Wild West" which claimed ten nominations.
Major nominations for "Gigli" include worst film, worst director, worst actor (Affleck), worst actress (Lopez), worst supporting actor (Justin Bartha), worst supporting actress (Lainie Kazan), worst fake accent, and worst on-screen couple. Only Universal's "The Cat in the Hat" seems poised to give Ben and J. Lo a run for their money. The Christmas stinker starring Mike Myers earned ten nominations, including worst film, worst actor (Myers), worst supporting actor (Alec Baldwin), and worst fake accent (Myers).
"2003 was a disastrous year for movies," said Bad Cinema Society co-founder Ray Wright, 43. "We could have had ten solid candidates in every category, and that is a rarity for us. Just when I didn't think it could possibly get any worse, it did!" Indeed, the Stinkers ballot categories are filled to the brim with what society co-founder Michael Lancaster, 46, describes as "the worst of the worst." Even Academy Award winners aren't immune from getting a bad movie award nomination. Cuba Gooding, Jr. (an Oscar winner for "Jerry Maguire") has become a perennial Stinkers nominee. This time, three films in which he stars are up for six awards, including worst actor, most painfully unfunny comedy and most intrusive musical score.
The society also took the "American Idol" film flop "From Justin to Kelly" to task. The film, which was not screened for critics prior to its release last spring, will battle it out in eight categories, including Kelly Clarkson and Justin Guarini for worst actor and actress, and on-screen couple. The duo also croons one of the society's five worst songs of the year, "Anytime."
Making his first screen appearance since 1994's "Richie Rich," former child star Macaulay Culkin earned a nod from the society for his comeback role in the little-seen "Party Monster." In its terse review of the film, London's respected Guardian newspaper called Culkin "simply the worst actor ever."
Worst film nominees are Boat Trip, The Cat in the Hat, Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd, From Justin to Kelly, and Gigli. Worst actor nominees are Ben Affleck (Daredevil, Gigli, Paycheck), Macaulay Culkin (Party Monster), Cuba Gooding, Jr. (Boat Trip, The Fighting Temptations & Radio), Justin Guarini (From Justin to Kelly), and Mike Myers (The Cat in the Hat).
Worst actress nominations went to Drew Barrymore (Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle & Duplex), Kelly Clarkson (From Justin to Kelly), Kate Hudson (Alex and Emma & How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days), Lisa Kudrow (Marci X), and Jennifer Lopez (Gigli).
Supporting actor nominees are Alec Baldwin (The Cat in the Hat), Justin Bartha (Gigli), John Malkovich (Johnny English), Roger Moore (Boat Trip), and Sylvester Stallone (Spy Kids 3D: Game Over). Supporting actress nominees are Karen Black (House of 1000 Corpses), Penelope Cruz (Gothika & Masked and Anonymous), Robin Givens (Head of State), Lainie Kazan (Gigli), Estella Warren (Kangaroo Jack).
Lancaster and Wright started the Cinema Society in 1978 while working as movie theater ushers as a way to "honor" Hollywood's big studio blunders which they saw for free as a company perk.
