This must be a very popular bike trail. From Budapest, the Paris of the east, to Vienna, a world capital of music, you can see a lot of cyclists from different countries biking along the 260km-long trail, enjoying the breathtaking scenery of Eastern Europe.
Unfortunately, before we were out of Budapest, it rained cats and dogs, so we stayed under a bridge as a shelter in a suburban area.
The following morning, it rained again right after we got out of the city. We decided to rest in a covered porch. The next day, it stormed. With the loud thunder and bolts of lightning in sight, we remained in the tent until evening before venturing out to the food store.
The rain finally waned and it got a little cooler. We rode westward and came across a couple of Canadian cyclists, Sebastian and his wife, who gave us a map specifically for the bikers. It has detailed English descriptions. With such great information, we decided to detour from Komarom,
Hungary to Slovenská, the country bordered with Hungary in the south across the Danube River.
The 20km-long bike trail with dotted lines in the middle of the lane is a gravel road. Pedaling on the road, we were the only two souls. Accompanying us was the wind and the sounds it made rustling the tree leaves. Beautiful landscapes all the way, there would be no problem finding a place to camp here.
About 40 km past the trail, there sat a dam. The water level of both ends of the river is different. We walked in the drizzle and then stopped to watch boats pass through the dam. We had our meal in the pavilion at the top of the dam and met 3 bikers from Canada - a father and his two sons. They had planned to spend 3 weeks riding along the Danube from Switzerland to Budapest, so we gave them a map of Budapest.
Because of the rain delays in the past few days, we were behind our schedule. Therefore, we sped up to 101 km a day and arrived at Austria in the evening. Between Hungary and Slovenská was only a bridge; there’s no custom, neither between Hungary and Austria. The European Union is just like a big country. There’s no boundary between countries, which is very convenient for the tourists and local residents to travel.
