I am not hungry!

Translated by SFT

The second day after we entered Hungary, we met an athlete, Popeye. He had once traveled to Thailand and whenever he introduced himself in English, ‘I am Hungary,’ locals would offer him food, mistakenly thinking ‘He is hungry.’

My aunt has doubts about the same pronunciation of 'hungry' and 'Hungary' because she thinks nobody would name a country with the same pronunciation of 'hungry', so she has asked me how Hungarians say 'Hungary.'  Hungarians in fact call themselves Magyarország. ‘Hungary’ is English just like ‘Chinese’ or ‘Taiwanese’, which is only used in English communication, not what Chinese or Taiwanese call themselves.

Popeye used to be a wrestler and now he is a cake baker, making various creative styles of cakes.  He treated us to home-made ice cream to cool us down in the hot weather. In return, we gave him our wedding thank-you card.

He showed us to his work studio and made a sugar lily treat on the spot.

We gave him a Taiwanese commemorative stamp before we said good-bye to him.

When we were ‘picnicking’ in the park, a white-haired passerby in a white shirt gave us beer.  Before we could give him something in return, he disappeared. Yi asserted, ‘He must be an angel!’

After dinner, we camped under an olive tree, wondering what interesting thing could happen next in Hungary.
