Istanbul
is the largest city in Turkey with a population of about 20 million people. It is the only metropolis in the world that is situated on two continents - Europe and Asia.

With such a dense population, it’s understandable that traffic flow suffers because of the crowds.

People need to take a ferry across the river to the Istanbul European region. A ticket cost 1.75 lira per person; bicycles are free.   It takes about 10 minutes to get to the other side.   We enjoyed the breathtaking scenery along the boat ride.

After we got off the boat, we walked with our bicycles to browse around this old city.  The first amazing sight was the
Sultanahmet Camii (Sultan Ahmed Mosque also known as Blue Mosque for the blue tiles on the walls of its interior).  It was built in the early 17th century.  The Sultan Ahmed Mosque is one of the two mosques in Turkey that has six minarets.  The other one is the Sabancı Mosque in Adana.  The mosque in Mecca has the most - seven minarets.

Across from the Sultanahmet Camii stood the Aya sofya Cathedral , which is one of the seven world heritages. It was constructed in the 5th century under Roman Emperor Constantine the Great. It was a church, later a mosque (during the Ottoman Empire) and it’s currently a museum.  It is famous for its dome because of the innovative construction and the size ( 31 meters in diameter and 45 meters in height). It’s only second to that of Saint Peter’s Church in Vatican, Italy.

We plan to arrive at Greece on 6/16 after visiting Istanbul, a mysterious city of great cultural significance. We will surely miss all the Turkish delicious food and hospitality.
