狄金森(Emily Dickinson1830-1886)生于麻薩諸塞州。父親為名律師及議員。她在中年后遁世隱居。她的詩短而抒情，感情与意象密切結合。大部分的詩在她死后才被發現而結集出版。

I’m nobody! Who are you?
Are you nobody, too?
Then there’s a pair of us ─don’t tell!
They’d banish us, you know.

How dreary to be somebody!
How public, like a frog
To tell your name the livelong day
To an admiring bog!


我是個無名小卒！你呢？...

Two swimmers wrestled on the spar

When one turned smiling to the land.
O God, the other one!

The stray ships passing spied a face
Upon the waters borne,
With eyes in death still begging raised,
And hands beseeching thrown.

直到朝陽東升，
當一個微笑著轉向陸地。
天哪，另一個！

路過的船只看到一張臉
在水面漂蕩，
在死亡里依然舉目乞求，
雙手哀懇地伸張。
